Craven,

You will probably have better luck with your quest posting in the classifieds.

Luck,

Doug at CameraLand has a great deal on the 1-4x illuminated Vortex scope for $399.99; great scope features with an outstanding service/warranty. If I needed another DG scope I'd be all over that deal.

My .458Lott RSM, .458B&M and .416Rem have the Leupold 1.5-5x 30mm illuminated circle-dot reticle fitted. This is a great scope with what I consider to be the fastest reticle for DG on the market

I strongly second dr.475. The trijicon 1X4 with the illuminated green triangle.

For Buff, agree with green or amber triangle
Trijicon 1X4 30mm tube. If you ever plan to hunt cats in dim light, I would consider the
Trijicon 1X4 with the green dot German #4 reticle, will work fine on Buff too. Have both, shot my Buff last August with 1X4 amber
triangle, 85 yds, dark shade, point of shoulder impact 416 Rigby w/ 400gr. North Fork
soft nose. Destroyed heart and lungs, lodged in offside shoulder just under skin.
Whole idea is illuminated reticle for dim light and NO batteries to fail.

Good Shooting,

Tetonka

The 458 Lott has a reputation of trashing scopes.

I would go with a scope made by a company that claims thier scopoes hold up to severe recoil.

I would look at Schmidt und Bender, and Swarovski...

I would buy 2 of them and have both sighted in in QD mounts...

Another vote for the Trijicon 1 x 4 green triangle. I have one on my Ruger .458 Lott and it works extremely well.

I've read all comments with interest as I'm looking for a new scope for my Lott -- reference NE450No.2's comment about Lott's being hard on scopes. Jeffe's comment about eye relief on the Nikon is of particular interest as that has been an issue for me. Haven't been cut bad yet, but ...just a tad more eye relief would be welcome.

I now have two Swaro z6 1-6 EER scopes, one illuminated and one not. The extended eye relief option made my 416 Rigby a joy to shoot, not having to worry about getting slammed. Spendy, but in my mind, worth it. SWFA has a good deal on the old model Z6i, at $1879.95.

Jeffe, I got turned on to the 1X4 African and the 2X8 Nikons, one has been on two different 500 MDMs now for 400+ rounds, still no issues, and is the scope going on this little trip this week. Also, 2X8 being on my 9.3 B&M and going on the trip as well. First time in 15 years I have left without backup scopes (might be a bad mistake?) and first time leaving without a Leupold!

Two other Nikons are holding fast on 50 B&M and 475 B&M, zero issues so far. I have busted 1.5X5 Leupolds, new straight out of the box on round #3 fired in 50 B&M in the past! One 18 month period sent 13 Leupolds back for repairs. Sent 4 back for repairs in December, got them back in February, have another busted right now, just waiting until I have 3 or 4 busted before sending them back, make it worth the postage! HEH........

I shot my Buff with a CZ rechambered to 450 Dakota. It had a Leupold 2.5-8X on it. First shot at 165yds. Plenty of glass for a long shot, if 2.5X is too much glass, it's iron sight time...

For me the nicest package is a Nikon Slughunter 1.65-5 power. It is bright and clear with 92% light transmission, is specifically built for heavy loads, AND it has 5.0" eye-relief throughout the magnification range. (Prices are great, too, just over $200+). In addition, Nikon has a sister scope for muzzleloaders that was called Omega and now called Inline. The Omega duplicates the Slughunter 1.65-5, but the Inline has a 3-9 model with 5.0" eyerelief.

currently, I've got the Nikon Monarch Compact 2-8 ($300+/-) on a couple of 416Rigbys loaded to 6000+ftlbs. (The 2-7x32 that Jeff mentioned is a ProStaff model, with 90% light vs. 95% of the Monarch, though with similar 3.8" eye-relief at the high power.) The Monarch's eye-relief is good, 4.0" to 3.8", but I am switching one of our Rigbys to the above Slughunter and using the Slughunter for a 500AccR, too. 5 magnification is all I need for hunting and pushing the scope 5 inches from the forehead allows one to consider funny shooting positions leaning against a tree or anthill without worrying about a bloody eyebrow.

I'm not sure why the Nikons have been so reliable with heavy loads. One rumor that I heard was that they glue/epoxy some of the innards in place. I only know that they work and if Michael hasn't had any issues, shooting all of the heavy loads that he does, then they are quite a step forward for the fraternity.

On my 416 i use two scopes, both zeroed and in Leupold QD mounts: a VXIII 1.5-5x20, and a Leupold fixed 2.5. That 2.5 is light, compact, tough as nails and I wouldn't hesitate to put it on your 458. QD mounts are also nice when you want to follow up with iron sights, or if (Heaven forbid) something goes awry with a scope, in 30 seconds you can reach in your day pack on pop on another one, already zeroed.

Yep, even busted the cross hairs out of the 2.5X ones too! 1.5X5s get busted on a fairly regular basis. Busted the lens out of a 1X4 VX2 recently as well. Had two more loose focus and had black flecks floating around inside. I have 1 1.5X5 that the focus has gone out above 3X still on a rifle, has not lost POI or any other issues. Will send it back when I bust a couple of more.
