I saw an old thread with someone using 5744 for reduced loads with the 505 Gibbs. Does anyone have any load data they're willing to share?

Chuck

duuno.. the case is huge, and most loads for it already require a filler. You might post this in the double section, and ask for the ratio guidance on that powder

Thanks Jeffeosso, I think Phil Shoemaker had worked up some loads based on a much earlier thread. I'm not planning on using fillers with full power or just under loads. The A-Square Manual lists 136g of RL22 with a 525g soft point and others have posted me loads. I've heard you don't need fillers with 5744 so I'm kinda interested in it for some plinking loads ...

Chuck,
I've heard that too.. and since i don't like less than 80% loads, I haven't loaded any really big cases with it.

the double guys have a rule of thumb for the 5744

Chuck, my next loads are with Reloader 22 and will be using 130grains +/- no filler as this will be near 100% load with Macifej's long 558grain fn bullet. I just don't see any need for fillers with the powders available concrning the .505Gibbs. Rodney.

Forgot to mention that the removable muzzle break that CZ offers does work to reduce felt recoil. Also the minimal starting loads with IMR7828 seem to be considerably reduced especially in recoil. Rodney.

Thanks Rodney, I hadn't given much thought to a muzzle break that I can remove. With a 505 Gibbs it might make some sense. Of course I'd have to practice with it off with full power loads because I wouldn't leave it on while hunting ...

Figure the max case capacity and then start with 40% IE 100 gr max case capicity start with 40 gr. I have used this on 470 NE, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H, and soon will be working a reduced load for 404 Jeffery and the 577 NE & 458 Lott. Also use lead bullets for the 470 NE and 577, Hornady 2nds for the 404, and the regular Hornady for 416, 458 Lott.

It does leave a few specs of unburnt powder but i always finish up with some full loads to clean it out.

Ok- Here is a load that works. Fed 215, 55grs of XMP 5744 , NO FILLER and a stock .505 woodleigh. Shot POI at 50 yrds and no recoil. You can easily move upwards,-ROB

Thanks much guys! I'm saving these to my 505 Gibbs reloading journal I'd like to shoot 20 to 40 rounds through the rifle per session and don't want to get punch drunk I figure I'll end with 5 or 10 full power loads every session.

Thanks again,

Chuck

You might give IMR's Trail Boss a try for reduced loads...it's fluffy and fills the space of big cartridges.

Chuck,
Huntingtons carries a 600 Grain Round Nose Gas Checked Cast Lead Bullet sized .506 for the Gibbs. This is the only source I have found so far for a more economical bullet.

I read much more than I post; but have been following all of the .505 threads - I'm on my second one; first was sold to a board member here - I missed that gun enough to go replace it with the exact same thing!

I'm also very interested in load options for the .505 Gibbs, as well as bullet options for the range. I've just placed an order with Mt. Baldy - they also advertise .507 bullets, gas checked, for the .505 Gibbs. I hope they will arrive in a week or two and I'll be able to report. Would be interested to hear from anyone who has used them in the past (ordered some .416's as well):

James,

Was this a 505 you built on an enfield action that Ray Atkinson later owned? Thanks for the loading data.
