WSM follower from someone should be able to use (mill out alot) the mil box.. if not, expand it! then standard rail work easier than a 458 winmag, as it has a shoulder to work with jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? I windowed the magazine by milling the sides and front of military bottom metal. Made an aluminum insert to make a new front wall of the magazine. Made it easy to get 3 down in a mag previously designed for 8 mm cases. Used a Fajen's plastic stock from Midway and epoxied in spacers to get the well to the right width. I sandblasted and parkerized the spacers before they were inserted. Rail adjustment was done on an action that did feed 7 Rem Mag previously. Needed to move the shoulder forward some. After the 600, they will seem like popguns! while I believe Dave invented the 470mbogo before he found AR, they are synonomous with me, as I basically found them on on the same day. Why do I mention that? Well, Dave has inspired quite a few of us, and we have invented several rounds which are gaining in popularity here. I only include rounds that i know are written in steel (c), so to speak. * designates rounds I have shot, ^ that I own, have owned, or built. (all the Hubel rounds) 12ga FH Rob and Ed (Rob designates Ed as equal on it) 700 HE 3.25 Ed, for John and Jeffe 600 OK -Rob (and our own fritz454 made the first cases) *585 Nyati - Rob FIXED the design 577 BME - Boomy (assist Jeffe) 550 diameter invention - RNS *550 Magnum - RNS 550 Gibbs Rich (teasing Rich here, he's still at 550 mag levels!) ^*550 Flanged Jeffe and RNS (Double rifle round!!) ^*550 BPE - Hogkiller (Flanged loaded with about 1/3 oz of goex cart) ^*550 express RNS (i take an assist here) 510 KX - Rich 500 Mbogo RIP (or Dave handed me a dummy in 04, i think) ^*500 AR Jeffe ^*470 Mbogo Dave ^*470 AR Jeffe (Paul gets the assist) ^*458 AR Jeffe (Paul gets the assist) ^*416 AR (Paul gets the assist) ^*416 Hoffman (George, mgrhs, was a poster here) (416 rem is close enough to claim) .400 rounds Rip (i am still confused on naming on these) I blaime Dave for it all! Everyone designed something, with their own critereon for success, and I have had the pleasure of working with or at least doing some trades with, all of these fine gentleman, and I get to hunt and shoot with most of them. We have all worked together, in no coordinated way , helping each other out and sharing ideas, feedback, and co-dependence as being big bore wildcat junkies. While I am very pleased with my AR rounds, I still feel if you have a long action, the 470mbogo is the best all around rifle ... But in standard length actions, the 550 express, and the ARs are, IMNSHO, far ahead of anything else you can buy that fit in those length actions (3.4-3.35AOL) with the 458 probably the best, and the 470 has a special place in my mind. I didn't do a "short" magnum on these things... i took the super whizbang cases, set at 2.55 (2.65 for the 500) and made them as large or larger than their HH based cousins.. just leveraged standard actions and cheap brass!! The 500 (same things for the 550 exp) requires a wide action, or a single stack, but do some cool things. The 550 exp is the ultimate lowbuck stopping rifle... 2+1 in a standard mauser action, its the equal to a 577 NE in a light bolt gun and tolerable recoil. I was lucky enough to build the first one. I built the first one to prove the point, that it could be done cheap and work.. basically a mauser, a $150 barrel, and a $100 stock, with a 2+1 single stack, able to smash angry hippos from the boat! The 500 actually has range reports above of the spec 500 jeffe/505 gibbs, in a standard length action. I should have 7 die sets in the next 2 weeks, and those are all spoken for! Monsters in ruger actions!! With a 600, I would probably do the 500, just because! Of all the ones I have designed, the 458 is the most practical ... rebarrel a ruger, cheap bullets, better-than-458 lott ballistics, well, it just works. jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? ............Ya ,,,,I,de like a wildcat that is biggish .......The 350 gr Speer bullets are still not too high priced in .416 , but even less so in .458 ...The .416 is really the biggest bore diameter that I can see myself utilizing well @ 400 yrds from an easyish packin .rifle .........The 458 may have a bit of a [stopping ] advantage but its hard to say .........If the Mauser has the $ advantage over the Ruger I will go that way .....It will end up with an 18" or shorter barrel ......A .416 AR , # 4 contour 18" barrel ......330gr GS HV or 300 Barnes TSX @ 2700 fps .....Probably have a Holland Quick Discharge muzzle brake with no bottom ports ......................Rifle should weigh around 7-7,1/2 lbs ......... ....The scopeing would tip the balance to the Ruger $ wise ...... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined .... | |||
