Will a .400 Whelen do?

.400Whelen

The biggest I have seen on a 1903 is a .400 Niedner. This one is on a standard Mauser.

Well I know the Taylor is possible, there is one in the works right now. Smiler I was just wondering how many others were around. Those pictures by the way Michael are beautiful, I love the stock design on them. I was thinking about shots that would show a big round crammed into the action.

One guy from on here told me he had one in 458, but this was a couple of years back and he said he would send me some pics after he had a surgery. Sadly I am guessing it didn't go so well since I never heard back from him Frowner

Maybe I just need to focus on having big bore springfields made since they are such a rare thing. Big Grin (don't even tell my wife I made that joke, I'll be sleeping in the garage from now till eternity).

Rare?
I have a .45, a .50 and a .58, but not one of the .69 rifle-muskets.

That is truly a beautiful rifle and very unique.I don't think I have ever seen another Springfield takedown.
Is this your rifle?
I would love to have pictures of the takedown mechanism. Any possibility of getting some?
I would compensate you for your time.
Sorry for the interruption but I love takedowns.

That is really amazing. I have never even heard of that being done before. Who owns it and what are the details? I too would love pics of the mechanism.

Thanks very much.

Frank, Nice rifle, tell us more!!!!!!!

Many of the pre-war custom gunmakers made take-down 1903’s. Some like Worthen specialized in them.

Yes indeed it is a beautiful piece of work. I don't want to hijack this thread so I will post more info and photos on a seperate thread very soon.
It was built by August Pachmayer and I currently have two of them. Alas they are not mine. I am doing some research on them and photographing them for a dear friend. The takedown mechanism is truly a work of art as are all the components.

I know one PH in Zimbabwe who did have a 458WinMag built on a Springfield. I believe it was done by an African smith and was /is as nice a bigbore as you could want. Very plain working rifle but absolutely top craftsmanship.
This is the only bigbore Springfield I have ever seen in over 55 active years of active interest in bigbores.
