I picked up a Remington 798 in 458 win mag today. Walnut stock, iron sights, very nice shape. It has only been shot 14 times. What should something like that go for?? thanks

Dunno its just a Remington imported Zastavia with some work to smooth it up and getting it 100% shouldnt be any snickering. They orginally retailed for 999 then went down to 899 799 now they run 550-700 depending on where you look but if you want a larger gain and sell it quicker have it punched out to lott.

I all ready have 3 guns in 458 lott. I know that they will shoot the 458 win mag too. I just picked this up relatively cheap and it looked like a nice gun.

So was I - to a point.

They were the worst spec'd Zastava's I'd seen - not sure if that was Rem or just Zastava quality control.

I just didn't like them.

bigdoggy,

There's nothing wrong with them at all. I have a Rem 798 in green laminate I picked up from CDNN in .375 H&H that I had Mark Penrod re-chamber to .375 Wby and do a trigger job on. I relieved the barrel channel and glassed it and it was a little rough so I put some JB bore paste on the rails and sat in front of the TV and worked the bolt back and forth a few hundred times and it smoothed right up. It shoots sub-MOA, the action is now very slick, and it feeds flawlessly.

I own own or have owned everything from cheap rifles to customs to doubles and I will say this is now one of my favorite rifles. It's not fancy or pretty but it's damn accurate and reliable and is one rifle I will never part with. Slick up the action, do a trigger job, and correct the bedding and you will have a damn nice reliable and rugged rifle. I believe the .458s also came with a 26" which to me is a plus.

The value estimates you have been given are pretty spot on.
