Hi all, What kind of velocities are you getting for 400 grain bullets from your 22 inch barreled 416 Remington Mags? I shoot a factory Win 70 with the 24 in barrel. I am considering modifying to 22in, new sights, and restocking. I would like this rifle to fit ME a bit better.
With the latest news regarding the Winchester trademark, maybe I should just make one up on a MRC? Just to preserve the M70?
Best regards,

I'm in the same boat. Mine is still box new and now I'm thinking of shelving it for a while to see what happens in the future.

On the otherhand, I like a 22" barrel and am of the opinion that the 416Rem will not suffer much w/ losing 2" in barrel length.

GaryVA, I shot mine about 100 times now and I like it alot. I think the stock is designed well for recoil but it does not line up just right for me. The rifle cants to the left. The barrel end that is. I think the comb is too wide because I have to press my face hard into the stock to line up the sights.
On another note, it is very accurate with RX15 and BarnesX 325s it goes 2675fps ave and CLOVERLEAFS three shots at 100 yards. I was really excited when I shot this rifle, I just didnt expect that kind of accuracy.
From the investment standpoint, I am not sure what to do now. I am thinking about just going ahead and making this rifle a plateform for what I really want for hunting and foregoing any longterm collective value it may have. But yours has not been fired yet and that is an issue in the collectors market. I suspect that a short time (3-4 months) will tell us what will happen with the Winchester TRADEMARK. On some level I dont care. I just want a rifle that fits me very well! Wink

I have a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby that has been cut to 21" (why 21" 22 sounds like a caliber). Have no idea what the velocity is. Don't have a chrono and just get a gun to shoot well and then use it. According to Remington data based on a 24" barrel you lose about 10 to 20fps per inch below that. To me that is not significient. The Elephant I shot 2 years ago didn't seem to know it was a short barrel. I find the short barrels easier to handle, get in and out of a vehicle and just all round more comfortable. Accuracy is more than adequate at less than 1" for 3 shots. I have only shot this gun with 410gr Woodleigh's. Don't know what it would do with other brands or weghts.

I had a CZ550 416 Rigby for awhile with a 21" tube and had no trouble getting 2450 fps with 101 grains of RL22 (this load is from memory so may not be correct.) Velocity was measured on a Chrony. The whole package seemed to handle better with the shorter barrel. Might not be as much room to play with the Remington, though. Pay your $$, take your choice!

Good hunting,

Andy

You'll loose about 60 fps, and if any animal you shoot fails to die after you shorten the barrel, I can assure you it wasn't do to insufficient velocity Big Grin You'll now be on par with original 416 Rigby loads.

I personally cannot understand having a tool to collect vs use. There is nothing paticularly special about late model M-70's and I doubt they will see a signifigant increase in value with Winchesters current problems, the M70 and Winchester name have too strong of a market for it to be gone for long.

The pre-64 has a following because it was a very well built factory rifle. Late model M-70's were generally poorly made in comparison, and hence won't generate the same following.

Cut it down, have it stocked for you, and use it for what it was designed for, hunting big and dangerous game, not collecting dust in a gun safe.

My first .416 Rem. was on a custon Sako. Started with 24 1/2" barrel. Cut it back to 22" and lost 50 fps. That was with my Elk load, 300X bullet. Still went 2900 fps. after cutting.Powder was REL.15.
