i know this should probably be posted in another forum, but since you guys are big bore fanatics, i figured i'd start here. i have at one time, shot and owned a few big bore rifles, and enjoyed shooting them. my dream would be one day to hunt in africa with a classic big bore. with the economy being the way it is, my funds will not allow that for now. however, i would like to shoot some of the classic nitro express and some of the modern big bore catrridges, but i dont know where to go to shoot them and "try them out" and see which ones i like. is there a big bore shoot some of you guys do? i live near the chicago area, but some travelling would not be out of the question. i would have no problem paying for the ammo i shoot, would just like to shoot some of the classics that i have read and dreamed about, can anyone here point me in the right direction? thanks! *We Band of 45-70er's* "Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

byf42, Your best bet is to improve the quality of the people you socialize with by finding some big-bore owners in your vicinity. If you shoot at a range, you may notice some heavy boomers going off. Walk over and perform the following steps: 1) genuflect 2) ask nicely if you can fire a round or two, by a) offering to pay for the powder and bullet, and b) promising not to drop the rifle 3) genuflect on your way back to your bench. GeorgeS- I live behind the wall, ie the soviet sector of the US, here in Illinois. I have done that in the past, and that is how i got to shoot a 416 rigby, nad a great friendship! here in obamaland, guns are a no-no. the only "range" is an hour away, and most of the people shoot ar-15's and the like, have never seen a big bore there, hell, anything that is cool, minus the 270 winchester a guy let me shoot last time i was there. there are other cartridges i'd like to shoot, but the big bores would be neatest of all. btw... i would love to shoot your 470 capstick, that would be awesome!!! head trauma lives somewhat near me, and sent me a nice pm regarding this. not trying to hijack the forum, but if anyone lives in the area, maybe we could organize a shoot.. pm me or head trauma and let us know. its his show, so ask him first. thanks everyone! *We Band of 45-70er's* "Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

byf42- Brings up a good point on the idea of shooting the bigbores. The community of shooters in this catagory is still a very small percentage compared to what is thought of in the way of standard rifles/calibers. My thoughts are that having get together shoots with rifles of .375 or larger are a good thing in promoting interest and the industry. The "Shoot-N-Hoot" in Houston last year had a pretty strong turn out and think that it would only grow. If such an event were to take place again this year I'm thinking it would only have a greater turn out. Just some thoughts, but I believe if there were some sort of regular shoots that it could only grow into some good things, just use your imagination. Would like very much for another shoot, Rodney.

A group shoot is a good way to meet people and share the fun. It also is a great service to people like me shopping and saving for a double rifle. A little "barter" could be fun for those of us that have something different and unique to shoot. In my case, I don't have a double rifle yet but, I have some NFA toys we could play with. I'd love to see a Shoot 'n Hoot in Central Florida. Don't have much of a big bore, a .375, but I load it hot.

A lot of the crowd who own the type of rifle you desire are shut up in the Africa forum clique. They don't come out very often.
