My son is in the process of building a 458 Win mag. So far we have a LEFT HAND zastava action, with a Walther barrel fitted.

So now we need a stock. He has decided for this build he wants a synthetic stock, but I am struggling to find something to suit.

Earlier on this forum, the Bell & Carlson was suggested, but these are only available in RH. I like the features of the B&C and can modify the inlet to accommodate a left hand action. However I can only find the B&C with a RH cheek piece. Really dont want that, so thats a bit of a show stopper.

I also saw the SA made Armtec stocks mentioned on this forum. Their "Jeffery" model stock looked like it could be an option. I contacted them and they were initially positive. But they have stopped responding to my messages, so that seems to be a dead end.

Can anyone suggest another option? I would like something that looks somewhat "classic", will accommodate the Zastava action and stand up to the recoil as long as the parts are correctly bedded. Pre-inlet would be nice, but I can get a "flat top" inletted if needed.

McMillan

I had a left handed McMillan built for a ruger left handed 300 win mag.

Love it.

Very smart to build a .458 WIN.
No problem to sand out a McMillan barrel channel to accept bigger than No.5 sporter contour.
I have done that.
But No.5 is plenty heavy enough for a .458 WIN.

Not so.
https://mcmillanusa.com/mcmill...er-interarms-mark-x/

This classic style stock has a straight comb and a small cheekpiece with some cast off.
The forend will accept custom barrels up to a #5 contour.
It has crisp checkering appropriate for a classic stock.
We offer completely finished “custom-drop-in” stocks for the Interarms Mark X action only.
We do have inletting programs for most of the FN and 98 variations,
but because of the many styles of bottom metal, custom bolt handles and safeties,
we do not offer pre-finished drop-in stocks for them. We only offer 95% inletted blanks for gunsmiths to finish fitting and finishing,
or send barreled actions to McMillan’s shop for custom barrels/custom fitting at extra cost.
Available in right or left hand.

Hes 15. He did his own research and the 458 Win is what he came up with. I certainly wasnt going to argue with him. I just dutifully ordered the barrel for the action we already had.

Looking at the Interarms stock, it seems to be the best option so far. I wonder if I can get it sent to Aus? There is no permit requirement on this end for a stock, but I imagine they will not send it without a permit on the US end. Or maybe the newly announced changes to regulation in the US will make it easier? Anyhow, I will email them and see.

Good ol' President Trump rescinded the Obama ITAR crap at the last NRA convention in Indianapolis.
I saw him sign it.
Hell, I was there !
So was Chuck Norris, as spokesperson for Glock.

A 95% inletted McMillan Interarms stock is same as a 95% inletted Zastava stock.
Even I could expertly fit one of those to a Zastava.
What sort of barrel contour was selected for that .458 WIN with Lothar Walther barrel?

I would use a laminate. Heavier than McM, quieter, and more stable than wood (although I have no issues with my walnut stock on my DG rifle).

My son has decided he wants a McMillan Interarms stock in the "Dark Mcwoody" finish. Will of course have the magnum fill.

I have emailed McMillan, so will see what they are able to do nowadays. Just a shame I cant talk to Dick Davis there anymore. He was an outstanding ambassador for the company. His customer service was outstanding.
