Actually they did, out of the custom shop.

I used to own one.

There was one for sale on Gunbroker recently, and there was one for sale here in the classifieds a couple years back.

I checked the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Winchester catalogs, I see stainless steel versions came in lots of calibers, but the only mag length action was the 375H&H built in stainless steel.

Maybe you could find a M70 375H&H in
SS and have a SS 416 Rem Mag barrel fitted.

CAS,
the custom shop is that.. it's not production.. heck, they even did TWO 416 rigbys on the m70 from the custom shop...

then even did the 358 winchester, and did till they closed, but it was offically OUT OF PRODUCTION dince the 60s

so, did winchester make a SS classic in 416 rem ? NO, but their custom shop might have.

So, Jeffe, The USRAC Custom shop is not part of USRAC? Does that sound even remotely logical to you?

As a point of fact, they actually did a run of them, and there were enough of them around that a couple of wholesalers had them. I don't know the exact number, but they were most certainly NOT all one-off custom ordered rifles.

I have re-read surestrike's question several times, and I can't find where he asked if the stainless 416 was ever a regular production rifle.

Could it be that you were wrong, know you were wrong, and can't stand it so you are trying to reframe the question so that you can feel "right"? Rock on, bro. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

BTW, here is a picture of a stainless Model 70 416 Remington that USRAC never produced:

CAS,
Could I be wrong? Certainly.. and if you need to hear that, man, great for you
I WAS WRONG

Now, to answer the spirit, rather than exception of his question
NO, winchester never made a production 416 rem in stainless. though available, it was a special order, custom build, and avaialble with WINCHESTER/USRAC stamped on the barrel.

having it both ways? maybe, but it doesn't make a hill of beans difference to ME ..

Ya'll have a nice day... i wasn't trying to answer what winchesters custom shop made... like i said, that custom shop even made TWO 416 rigbys, but hardly a "does winchester make a 416 rigby" situation.

nah, man, I hope you aren't annoyed, as I give more of a darn that you would be than i do what the custom shop (CUSTOM) made
jeffe

A local Winchester dealer and gunsmith once told be that that the Winchester custom line was made by a company called "New Line".
I've never heard of them or seen a web site for them. Could be that the Winchester custom shop was the only door to access them.

For want of a better name I'd call it a 'tweener.' CAS II's gun and mine which is identical except mine has a distinct tiger striping to the wood, was a 1 of 100 Shot Show special in, I think, 2001. Not exactly production but not exactly one off custom either. A few AR members have them. We posted pics of them on a thread a year or two ago. One was posed with the cape buff the owner shot. Not closet queens at all.

BTW, mine is stamped Winchester, New Haven, Conn. Nothing USRAC at all.

No reason for a shit storm guys. Wink

Thanks you've answered my question.

I was kind of wondering if they ever produced one like their rack grade plastic stocked .375H&H stainless guns.

I should have said so. Sorry guys.

CAS,Onefun,

How much did those stainless guns go for in the day?

I am interested in one just like that if I can find one.

Could be yours. That's not the one I used to own. The pics I posted are the one that was for sale here. For some reason, I ended up posting the pics for the seller.

That was a nice rifle, and I should have bought it. Don't recall the price, but it was a steal.

When I said mine is exactly like the one in your photos, I meant exactly. Even the serial number is the same. Smiler

I did end up buying it from a fellow AR member, the one you posted the photos for. The price was right!

The last one I saw for sale went for over $1,000 more than I paid, not that I'm planning on selling.

Good luck finding one, surestrike.

Surestrike:
I bought one just before Winchester went south for about $1900.00. Most of the ones I saw were 416 Remingtons although I'm sure they made 375 as well. The model I really liked was the one with the drop magazine , better bottom metal etc. that went for about $3500. That one was only in blue I believe.

Yep, they sold a couple of those stainless & walnut Winchester Custom Shop .416 Rem's out of a shop in Louisville, Kentucky. I passed, but I could not resist the Big Five in .416 Remington, Cape Buffalo in gold leaf on the floor plate, number XX of 125, and the last of the five, 125 of each. Not as rare as the stainless .416 Remington. thumb

I got one of those! It is at Dave Christman's getting an overhaul. Stainless/Wood really turns my prop and I have come to like the caliber. The photo was from when it belonged to Mark Young so I cant lay claim to the pelt.
