Friend of mine here in Korea wants to get into big bore rifle stright from the factory. Doesnt want to play around with building one or deciding what he wants to build on what ever random platform. I tried talking him into buying the 458AR in the classifieds, but he found the Remington 798's on Gunbroker in the 458 Win Mag caliber for good deals and now he wants one. But he asked for my opinion on them and I have no idea what to tell him...

So im going to ask here...Anybody have any personal opions on this line of rifles? I dont think Remington would build any junk and its a very nice looking rifle too boot the low price.

Remington was merely the importer; the rifles were built by Zastava.

Reviews here have been generally positive.

P.S. Remington no longer imports these rifles, hence the closeout. If I remember correctly, someone else is importing them under a new name.

I looked up the history on the Remington website and they claim production for 2 years from 06-08. I guess that makes sense though, seeing as how in some of the item descriptions for the rifle say its a Mauser style action.

So im assuming Remington just imported these rifles and stamped there names on them?

Correct. They were previously imported by Charles Daly; you will find threads on the CD imports here as well.

Brando, I have one and I like it. The cost/benefit analysis comes out on the positive side.

I looked at one of the Remingtom imports and they seemed like a great deal for dirt cheep. And, very low cost material for a custom build or any home project, cut barrel down or re-stock. Maybe a bit on the rough side.

But, in the long run (right out of the box, no mods) I think a buyer would be 100% happier with the Winchester M70. No doubt in my mind.

Also depends on the price. I saw ads as cheep as $500 for these Remingtons, which is almost nothing for a new 458. I also saw some for 800 and thats not such a deal. For that price(7-800), I would much prefer a CZ550 at right around $1000. Not to say the CZ are without QC issues, but its a get what you pay for situation and I think on the low cost side of the equation the CZ is lot more gun for a little bit more money. Actually I would prefer a CZ at $1000 over a Zastava at $500 if I was going to keep it for the long term. The CZ also provides the option of getting a 458Lott or 416Rigby chambering.

How things have changed, so many choices.

The guy wanting this rifle is just attracted to it out of the box...He likes that laminated stock, and dark checkering. The benefit of it being a big bore just makes him smile...

Hell at the price they are going for, I might try and talk the little brother into getting his first big bore.

I have one of these in .375 that I bought for a song. I agree with the other poster that for $700 or $800 I would rather have a CZ but if you can pick one up for $500, like I did mine they are a bargain. A little JB Bore paste on the bolt and raceways and that rough feeling action will slick right up.

I bought one of these for around $500 and punched it out to a 458 Lott. Added a three position safety and replaced the trigger. It makes a good project gun, however it is a little light for full bore Lotts!

I like the way you think Jeffe...I want a 458AR for my collection but funding right now will not allow me to purchase Peyton's Ruger based rifle...

I had a choice between the Remington and the CZ550. I opted to spend a little bit more and go with the CZ. Sure, I had to do a little bit to get it to feed smoother (only when shooting the 500 gr banded solids) and reinforce the stock but I felt it was a solid platform to build off of or simply just shoot out of the box.
