Hey gents, well I went to go bother another local gunsmith yesterday and I happened to snag a P17 action with a matching bolt. It's in wonderful condition, ser. 300xxx, made by Winchester. Has everything except the trigger and I need to fix the bolt release.
Now for the natural question gentleman, I'm kinda confused as to what I want to chamber this baby in. I'm leaning towards one of the higher .500's, but I could go down to a heavy .458. I'm planning on building it for the next time I travel over to Kodiak.

That action will comfortably handle such powerhouses as the .375 H&H, .416 Rem Mag, .458 Lott, .470 Capstick, and .404 Jeffery.

I personally wouldn't use it to house cases with larger heads than those rounds.

If you're into wildcats, the .375 RUM case is an interesting one to start with.

Great start for a big bore, with a 1917 action.

A 458 Lott is a natural for that action. Cheap bullets and brass for lots of practice. With plenty of power. As for a trigger, I have used two Timmneys (Model 110) in my Modle 30S's. Very easy to fit and works fine for me.

.510" bore sized rounds would be fun if the chamber was cut to use surplus BMG bullets.

Keith, thanks! It's one of those actions that I've made plenty of rifles with, but never made one for myself. I've been getting frustrated with that new slide action I've been fabricating so I figured I'd do something refreshing.
I would do a .458 Lott but I own 2 rifles so chambered. Maybe go for a all-out .458 RUM? Who knows, it never hurts to have another Lott, maybe just sell one of the others. I have time to decide on the chambering since I'm going to tune, engrave and reblue the action plus I'm probably going to make the stock myself depending on what I can find out here.

500 a2?
500 wells?
550 magnum?
500 mbogo
or my idea of the 500 a2 with the belt trimmed off for better feeding...

long case). Case slides through front of
action fine.I calculate that all 4 lugs
will handle 45,000 lbs thrust. A 30,000
psi load in the 700H cases will have
9600 lbs thrust, 40,000 psi load 12,800
so margin is ok. 40k load will get you
way over 10,000 ft lbs.Ed

Does it still have the ears on it ....... If you want ultimate toughness ,leave them on ..It is a very good peep sight as it is.. If its going to be a bear rifle it should be a 450 Watts to be proper.........

Well I went and bothered David, the old gunsmith friend of mine and bought yet another P17 reciever, but this one is going to be for a friend of mine. He's interested in big bores but has never owned one, so I'm going to build him a .375 H&H on it, and pass on a little knowledge on firearms building. He's a apprentice right now and so far catching on rather swiftly, except for lever actions!
Now after a lot of consideration, whisky and talking with my brother, I've narrowed my choices down to 3 chamberings, the .458 Lott, .470 Capstick or .495 A-Square. What do ya'll think?! I want to step up in power from the .458 Lott, I'm unfamiliar with the .470 Capstick however it looks promising as well as the .495. I'm leaning more towards the Capstick.
By the way both of the recievers are earless, and as for a .700 NE bolt action, it sounds awesome but ouch?! That would be a wall hanger, not something practical I would use very often as I can already tell.
