Not to dredge up the whole Spartan doubles deal again, but I happened to see that EAA does still have barrel inserts available for their 12 ga SxS shotguns. It appears that one could scrounge up one of their shotguns for a couple hundred bucks and then spend another $320 on inserts for a double in either 45-70 or 30-30. You could make it a cape gun even more cheaply.

EAA parts

How accurate do you suppose a setup like this could be? Of course, there are no sights on the shotgun, but that big solid rib on top could be D&T for some simple express sights pretty easily (or just solder them right on). It might be a good experiment...

Accuracy? Who knows. It doesn't seem that there is any way to adjust the POI, however, and I would think that POI would change every time you removed and re-installed the insert.

It looks like one would be throwing their $320 away if they expected to get some sort of useful double rifle on the cheap.

B5Jack- I don't think it's what you think it is...lol. It's an orange on a spike being hit by a bullet. I just love stop-action photos of impacts.

I guess the consensus is that it's only wothwhile if it's a 'real' double.

Barrel Inserts
Now you can convert your IZH43, IZH43K, IZH43KH, or MP213 to a side by side rifle or rifle/shotgun combo. The insert system holds the rifle barrel inside the shotgun barrel at the muzzle and breach. Thus, creating a more accurate rifle than traditional side by side rifles. Calibers: (45-70, .308 WIN, .30-06, .222, .223). NOTE: The barrel insert will only work on the above model shotguns that have the following features: 20-12ga/2.75 barrel, factory installed screw chokes and extractor.
45-70 $159
(price per barrel)
30-30 $159
(price per barrel)

It would sure be fun to try it. In the rabbit season (which has been unspectacular this year in my part of Australia) I put a 22Mag insert in the right barrel of my scoped drilling and a 22LR insert in the left. hese are Germa inserts with a short 6" barrel which floats and adjustments at the base so that the POI can be moved to the sights.

The insert barrels may be able to be regulated. You'd need to put a pin in the adapter and file a groove in the chamber so they'd always be oriented the same way and then machine down the chamber end of the adapter slightly and add some means of adjustment.
