Bully For The .405

I apologize if I'm the last to have discovered this article. I read it last night and felt it a good read so I thought I'd pass it along.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the link. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I dislike Boddington for some reason. I mean his articles are interesting and all, but he bugs me. I have no idea why. Smiler

I should think Pretty Boy Boddington was not paid much for this article. The depth and insight of this article was right up there with the depth of my reflection in a pool of water.
This man is a master of putting words on paper and connecting them in a manner to gain the greatest word count while saying as little as possible.
He should have be a diplomat or a politician.

I have a great respect for Boddington, he has been there and done it all many times, he has more experience than 99% or the gun writers we have today...His book Safari Rifles is one of the best...I met him on one ocassion and he was a gentleman of the first order.

Ray, I do not disagree with any of that. But MOST of his writing is vacuous.

I happen to like Boddington. One thing I know for sure, he has hunted more game with more different rifle cartridges than anyone else.

I admire that. I'm not envious of him, because if I was in his position, I'd do the same thing.

He seems to catch a lot of flack, undeserved in my mind. He serves his country with honor, and hunts in places I wish I could go to.

He would be welcome at my campfire anytime.

The 405 has come into its own with the bullet's we have now and Bob Reeve killed one of the biggest Brown Bear"s ever with one 40 yrs ago. Boddington has his pic with too many fine trophys for me too question his abilities as a hunter and marksman. I think he's the reel deal.

I tend to use more than enough gun

With the best of my heart, I don´t understand why Boddington get the amount of flak he is recieving from his US brethren.
As a hunter / writer, I guess a few here on AR can match his world wide experience.
I enjoy his writing mostly because it is based on the real stuff and not on hearsay.

Who pays his trips is none of my business, neighter is his US Marines service records.

I like this guy and got several of his books.

I plan to take my .405 Winchester in a Model 1895 to the Selous in August. Mike at North Fork and made some 330 grain solids and cup points that will feed through the magazine. Velocity should exceed 2100 fps with them (we'll see). In any event, since I extended the throat a bit, Woodleigh 400 grain solids truck along at 1950 fps, so I'll have a rifle that'll duplicate the tropical load in the .450/.400. I put a period Lyman 21 reproduction sight on the gun and with a simple push of a lever with your fingers, the point of aim can be adjusted for the difference in the bullets. The sight even has a fine and a "ghost ring" peep which is also finger operated. Nice!

The 1895 will compliment the Westley Richards double in .450/.400 3 1/4" that going to Africa, also.

BTW, Winchester has a special run of these rifles in an interupted thread takedown model available from Davis Bros. (I think??).

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Tex,

Thanks for posting the article. I was going to do it a while ago (when a forumite requested evidence hat CTB has not raved about every product he has tested Smiler ) but it completely slipped my mind.

I enjoy the great majority of CTB's works and thought this article was quite well written and informative, and not just because I was distracted by the pictures of his daughter. Wink

Cheers,
Canuck

There is no need for this to get into a pissing contest. I personally have little use for Boddington's writing because I expect to learn something when I read. But Boddington's works are generally full of mish mash and do not take a stand or offer an honest critique. So I gave up. If other guys like his writing because they feel they do learn from him, or at least feel entertained, that is great.

My favorite Boddington article was entitled something like "Best Calibers for Deer". Four pages later, he said he felt the .270, .308, 30-06 and .280 would do a good job on deer. Smiler

I concur with 500grains that Boddington is very general in his writing - not taking any firm stands on things.

In Safari Rifles, he writes that the 340 Wby is a bit too much for him recoil-wise, so he prefers the 338 Win Mag.

Then, in a 375 article recently in Rifle Shooter, he regards the 375 Wby and RUM being superior to the proven 375 H&H. Inspite of the fact that the 375 Wby and RUM are "worse" than the 340 Wby when it comes to recoil.

The old guys like Elmer Keith et al have basically written what needs to be written. Today we have much more advanced bullets and so forth, but today's gun writers still need to wring out something to sell.

Boddington doesn't step on anyone's feet in the 375 article - he pretty much says that all calibers are ok.

I enjoy Safari Rifles a whole deal. I have a ton of respect for Boddington. But I also predict that within 2-3 years, we will see an article where Boddington praises the 378 Wby and the Lazzeroni "equal", to be the best calibers in the 375 gang.

Maybe he's just getting better at withstanding recoil...
