yes, but might be better off selling the 416rem and buying lott or hornady hh basic

if those are fired, anneal them and use imperial sizing wax .. or kiwi neutral boot polish

Very easily. In fact, that is what I used to use for 458 Lott brass back before Hornady. Cornmeal and 18 gr Bullseye blew it out to perfect 458 Lott.

But with the coming of Hornady 458 Lott brass I never used 416 Rem brass again.

Works well. I have a bunch which went to .450 Ackley which is fractionally longer than the Lott.
If you want some new Lott, I have some I was going to sell.

I have a Sako AV .416 Remington magnum being re-barreled to .458 Lott, and I have a good supply of .416 Rem. mag. brass that I would like to utilize. Here's what I've done to form .458 Lott brass -

1. Lube the inside of the case neck and seat an inverted Barnes .458 450gr solid bullet to expand the neck.
2. Knock out the bullet and re-seat right side up to further expand the case shoulder.
3. Knock out the bullet, lube the case and re-size it using the .458 Lott full length resizing die.
4. Expand the case neck using the .458 Lott neck expanding die.
5. Trim the case by 0.05" to 2.80" overall length.

The formed cases should work fine, but maybe there's something I've overlooked?

Couldn't a tapered expander be ordered to take the .416 neck up to about .465, then just use the standard .458 Lott dies to size back down, then trim to length?

Going up to .465 should take the shoulder out smooth and slightly oversized before sizing back down with the Lott dies.

Thanks for the idea, more than 1 way to skin a moose I suppose. Also, RCBS offers case forming dies - .458 Lott from .375 H&H - would likely work with .416 Rem. mag. cases.

The .458 Lott case has a rather curious ever so slight so-called "ghost shoulder." I believe the purpose is to prevent the bullets in the rounds in the magazine from moving under recoil force.
