I am a cake but I know and that is a principle to improve hehe, and long ago I will not be hassle with the cartridge 458 Lott. But I really do not know how it is regarded today as this cartridge and I have a great Cz Safari Magnum in this relatively "young" I wonder about cartridge is regarded today as the cartridge 458 Lott. Forgive my insistence, but I also move a little contributed to the forum and I'm happier with my rifle after hearing your answers. Well after reading post on the 500 AR, Jeffery, etc ... I feel the need to reaffirm my success in the choice of rifle and cartridge. I apologize for my insistence and the loss of time which I can bring.

Sincerely,

Oscar

Someone once said that the 458 Lott is the 30-06 of big bores. That is high praise. It's not fancy but will do everything you need it to do. The goldilox of heavy mediums. Can be loaded up and down well. It's only fault is it's lack of faults. It's so practical and useful it's almost boring to some. You made the right choice. Just add to your collection with more rifles and cartridges!

I think boom stick is right. Of course your application if the 458 is not stated but I can;t think of anything you would hunt with the 458 Lott that would necessarily need anything other than a 458 Lott...if you get my drift. Shoot with confidence...

I might argue that the 458 Win is the 30-06 of the big bores - and the 458 Lott is the 300 mag. Big Grin

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

The yanks basically wrote themselves into safari history with this calibre. It gets similar respect as the classics, despite being after that time. Definite pedigree in any gun as a result.

Let's not forget that the credit should go to Buhmiller for the 458 on the 375 HH case. Lott was just a better marketer.

Don't know whether the credit should go to Buhmiller or Watts for the Lott but in any case I see no real reason for the Lott with todays powders and bullets. The 458 Win Mag can be loaded to it's original predicted speeds with little trouble and I believe it will handle any animal easily. And it fits a regular length action which was the design intention as I understand it. I have not shot a Lott but have fired quite a few rounds thru a 450 Watts and I feel the recoil is definitely more punishing than that of a 458 Win. I think the Lott is popular ,not because of any real superiority, but the poor reputation that was heaped on the 458 Win Mag because of poor powder performance.

I certainly like the Ruger .458 Lott that I have. I did a hell of a job on my buffalo in August. Wasn't particularly impressed with the bullet or it's performance but My buffalo went onto his back, all 4 feet in the air after being at 20 yards. And it wasn't a big bone structure shot. Took the top of his heart off. I'm keeping mine but changing brands of bullets

What bullet are you changing from?

Hornady DGX. I think the jacket material is too brittle. The first bullet we recovered had started to mushroom and then the mushroom sheared off. The second bullet we found had sheared off all the way to the cannelure. I probably will experiment with Barnes TSX, Swift A Frames or Trophy Bonded. And the Hornady's shot great, shot to the same point of aim as the DGS and within 4 fps of the softs. I might also try some Woodleighs. Had pretty good luck with them last year in Mozambique out of my .470 NE
