Well, since no one seems to want to buy it... It kicks the heck out of me -- is there a lesser caliber I could simply convert it to w. a rebarrel? (Fingers crossed for 404J)

you don't say what you're shooting in it, but try the 350 gr loads that hornady makes.... lots less recoil...or load it down to 45-70 levels.... put a mercury recoil reducer in the stock... make sure that the stock fits you, change the recoil pad....there's lots of options that are less expenve han a barrel change....

go big or go home ........

You can rebarrel to .416 Taylor, .375 Taylor, .338 Win. Mag., .300 Win. Mag., and a number of others.

Or, you can just load it down as jimatcat has suggested.

Why not just loaad it with 300, 350, or 400gr bullets at 45/70 type velocities.

Makes a great deer, wild pig, black bear over bait rifle.

Lots of fun to shoot as well.

I load all the way from round balls at bb gun velocity , 45 colt equivalent, original 45-70, high velocity 45-70, to loads that exceed factory ballistics. These loads are all accurate out of my mark x Alaskan. a .458 doesn't kick bad unless you want it to. a very easy cartridge to load for. for sure there's no reason to re-barrel to a 416 taylor as these loads are very easy to duplicate with the .458.

velocity is like a new car, always losing value.
BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

I didn't know you were trying to sell it. PM me with the details if you are still interested in getting rid of it. I might know someone who is interested........

If you're wanting to stay big bore, there is the 375 Ruger, 416 Ruger/AR, 416 Taylor, 425 Express. You won't be able to get the 404J in there without a lot of gunsmithing work, but a 425 Express would give you basically the same ballistics but on the generic Win Mag case

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

If a 458 is kicking the hell out of you, a 404 Jeffery might be too much too. I suggest shooting one first. Personally I like the idea of loading it down. Second choice would be to rebarrel to 375 H&H.

load 405 rem JFP at 2000 fps .. its a piece of cake to shoot and easy on the shoulder... right at the top of what a 405 can take, and not even idling for the 458.

I enjoy shooting cast 405gr bullets with a trailboss. This should not hurt you. If it does, you are not going to enjoy anything big bore.
