Perhaps not all that furious but it sounded catchy. All of these are meant for use in short action rifles, originally designed for use in the AR-10, but they work quite well in bolt guns as well. Short stiff actions should offer good accuracy potential, and for the not-so-weak-at-heart perhaps a good scout rifle or the last ditch back up ...(an AR-10 spitting out 8 500 grainers from one mag should make even the most determined bull elephant have second thoughts)

Shown are

- bottom magazine (old style DPMS LR) - .500 Phantom with 168 SMK in sabot. Cartridge main purpose to fire .50 BMG bullets from unmodified mag at subsonic velocity. Able to launch 975 gr bullet at 1100 fps with surprising accuracy (moa at 500 yards has been mentioned)

- top magazine (AR-10) - .450 Rhino with 300 gr Barnes X Spitzer. 24" barrel, about 2700-2800 fps with moderate pressure. Case is a modified .500 Jeffery, with same rim as the RSAUM ... which also fits the WSM bolt

In the row left to right

.338 Rhino with 200 gr CT BST. 24" barrel about 2900-3000 fps

.375 Rhino (no bullet shown) with 260 gr Nosler BT around 2750 fps

.416 Rhino (no bullet shown) with 400 gr Nosler Partition around 2300 fps

.470 Rhino (no bullet shown) with 500 gr Swift A-Frame around 2150 fps

All from 24" barrels with moderate pressure and unmodified magazines (2.8" overall loaded length). The 20 rounder will hold about 8 of these little gems

What? That little thing all the way on the right? Nope, not a .50 BMG case, bigger, and foreign. Totally different project..... gunsmile

So any of these to your liking??

Marty,
Damn fine looking.. when you going to get 550 version?

How does the 500 do with 642gr ball? can it be loaded around 3.1? I've got ONE mexican mauser action left....

I think the 475 or 500 would be wicked cool, even though... well, you know *I*have a 500 jeffe...

not a bad swap out for a wsm, though

Jeffe -

The .500 Phantom will lob the M2 ball ammo just fine, around 1800 fps tops, you can see more results here .500 Phantom load data

The max loaded length for the .500 is 3.34 with the 750 Amax ... we designed her for versatility ....

Marty-I got them here cut and expanded and everything else. Wanted to use them for the
12GA FH or a 750HE blaster as they were
longer than BMG cases.
But all the work putting on rims on bmg
brass for 12GA FH was enough
for me, and I didn't have the time or
ambition to also redo
primer pocket from berdan to boxer, so we
made 12GA FH from bmg cases.Primer pocket can't be even cleaned up and drilled for 20 mm
boxer primers as the berdan is bigger diameter.
Have you got a berdan primer supply of that
size.They are same as 14.5 x 114 Russian, and
people are looking for them.Ed.

Is the 470 Rhino info correct? If so that will duplicate the Nitro Express and Capstick rounds with a much shorter case. How much powder can you stuff into that short fat thing?

Marty,

Do you know if your case has more or less capacity than a shortened Laupa/Rigby?

Roscoe -

The case holds 99.5 gr water, measured, and at 55000 psi, 2.00 case length and 2.80 loaded length with the 500 gr Swift A-Frame, QuickLoad in a 24" barrel suggests 69.0 gr IMR3031 will yield 2150 fps. With the Barnes 500 gr RNSP, it suggests 77.0 gr Win 748 will yield 2200 fps. Compressed charges go a little faster, and the case can take more than 55,000 psi ...

Roger -

The Rigby/Lapua is 0.59 at the base, rated to 61000 psi for the Lapua. Our case is 0.62 at the base and should be rated to the same pressure. It SHOULD hold more than the Rigby/Lapua. You can form them from 500 Jeffery and have about the same bolt face as the Rigby ... the 338 Rhino measured 95. gr water capacity, the 338 RUM is 111 gr and the 338 LM is 114 ....

This might make a nice new toy! Would this fit in an action designed for one of the newer Short Mag's? Hell if you could get 2000 FPS I think it would make a great little thumper!

While we were mainly looking at the AR-10, these should fit a WSM or RSAUM action quite nicely. Might need to do a little magazine work, but that is not beyond most decent gunsmiths. Should make a beaut' of a brush thumper. Heck, got one request for a pistol in the 470 today .... OUCH, more man than I am

Wild. eek2 What action will work with this case? Will you turn down the rim to work with a "stock" .50 BMG action? Open up a .50 BMG bolt? Something entirely new?

This stuff is fascinating.
