Nakihunter,

With all respect to a connoisseur of fine rifles, particular old Mannlichers, I believe you may not have too much experience with open sights? I do have a fair amount, please feel free to PM or email me at any time, I would be happy to help your project in any way. I am in NZ also.

Here is the update.

I got some WSL-8 (?) Shotgun powder from a friend.

I tried 20 gr and half sheet of toilet tissue stuffed in and tamped down with a rod.

Worked like a dream. The sound was a loud bang like a regular shot but little recoil. The cases were perfectly formed - just a tiny bit rounded at the shoulder compared to a regular fired case.

I measure the cases before and after and then compared them with other Norma 9.3 brass that I had loaded with a bullet and fired - Very happy with results. Case dimensions at the neck & shoulder length & diameter are correct. Brass length has shrunk by 2 mm as is to be expected.

I saved $30 worth of good Sierra SP bullets!

Now I am ready to do some loads and check the rifle again - properly this time.

The weather has been very good ....

Made good progress today & shot the 3 loads, 5 shots each at 50 meters with chronograph and rest - palm on pad under foreend

The IMR 4831 3031 (sorry for the error!) load is the classic book load and looks most promising, I may need 1 more grain to get 2150 fps.

I will now have to try it out at 100 meters.

I also need a lot of practice with open sights.

I suspect that the main reason for the 15" high impact was the tension on the barrel from the really tight spot with magazine floor plate under the stock.

Where is the IMR-4831 load target?
You are showing H322, AR2207, and IMR-3031 only?

Correction RIP! IMR 3031 Wink

I am planning to move that to 48 or 49 gr for a velocity of around 2300 fps for the 250 gr Sierra 250 gr bullet.

Makes sense now.
That does look like a good IMR-3031 load.
Hodgdon's BENCHMARK (ADI Bench Mark 2) ought to be about the same, grain for grain, and might have better THERMO-BALLISTIC-INSENSITIVITY,
if you ever come across any of that powder.
