Ugly with a capital Ugh! I shot a 340 Weatherby once that had been restocked with a thumbhole stock. The damn thing nearly cleaved the thumb from my right hand! It seems that the owner had small hands and it was designed to fit him... I will say that the plywood look is highly complementary to the styling of that stock though... jpb

that's the RMF "wildcst" ... a friend of mine bought one, for his 10/22.... and its even UGLIER in person... did I get drunk and carve that lion/puma/leopard/chesshire cat on the floorplate? i figured since it's a combo, and badly done, i must have done that1!! in all honesty, that stock is 120 bucks from rmf, and, for 120 more, you could replace it... it's worth maybe 800 as is, and if you get any money for stock work, a decent piece of wood would take it to 1200 jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Guys, in 1971, when that gun was probably put together, it was likely considered stylish. Today, it's about as stylish as a leisure suit. And they're asking $3100? Try $300 since the stock, scope, and mounts will be discarded. George

Whats a matter with you guys, thats a beatiful gun, I love thumb holes and stainless steel and stocks that look like licorce, nice and shiney wood and high gloss dipped metal...I will soon sell all my crumy English guns and toss those crappy doubles in the drink, even my new Hoffman 10.75x68, its way to English for my taste. You guys just have no taste at all.... Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I think they are ice skating in Hell! peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

Hideous does not do that piece-of-work justice or is condign description. One runs into one of similar style now and then and as always beyond words. Good for a laugh now and then.

Quite apart from taste, beauty after all lies in the eye of the beholder, I wonder what it must be like to use a stock like this?? People tell me thumbhole stocks can be a tad slow. I wonder if the curved cheek-piece would not have the same effect. You would sure want to place your cheek exactly where it is supposed to go... I also wonder what the finger groves in the pistol grip would do?? The one feature I can sort of see a point in, is the front swivel. Being on the front side of that little hump would probably stop it cutting up the shooter's hand under recoil... - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... quote: Hey Ray I knew you would love it. It's right up there with the purple dice hanging from the mirror of your Citroen. Send those crappy and out of style English rifles to me. I'm a bit of an antique collector when it comes to rifles. I think some of them might be worth the cost of storage someday. I know where there is a Lawson stocked 458 Remington that you could get to complete your dangerous game battery. Maple stock, died blood red with a 4x Bushnell. Just tint those glasses Vermillion and you can be our Truman Capote look alike.

The "animal" head on the floor plate looks like a cross between a house cat and a 'possom crapping peach pits. Last year, while riding around the mountains of North Georgia, I had the opportunity to use an outhouse apparantly designed and built by the same guy who was gunsmith on this rifle. The "swell" in the cheekpieces on the seat were identical to that on the rifle and the poop hole was likewise situated where the thumbhole is on the pictured beauty. I can't think of anything positive to say about the rifle, but the outhouse seat was mighty comfortable and the "cheekpiece" swells make aiming pretty darn easy. I'm sure any good African PH would be just thrilled to have his hunter pull this rifle out of the case. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

What was the gunsmith thinking?? I would just love to drag that thing to Africa and ask the PH's what they think of my new rifle, but $3100 is way too much for a joke. This rifle with a Redfield, a finishing touch. Dak

476 N.E., Yes I got the Hoffman from Paul, I have been lusting after it for years, but just never quite got it bought, finally we just hauled off and did the deal after a ton of negociations, lots of fun was had and now its mine... I bought all the Horneber brass Huntington had, and they even had a set of dies and shell holder (can you believe that) and I have a ton of .423 bullets... A 350 gr. Barnes X at 2375 FPS with a cup full of WW-748 is my load and that should thump ole Nyati pretty hard. I am awaiting Northfork to run another batch of 340 gr. softs but in the meantime have threatened Bill Dowtin with terroism if he does not send me a couple of boxes of those Northforks until Mike goes ot work.. It will never wear a scope and has two down and one up on a quarter rib and its smak dab on at 100 it appears from a shot or two in the back yard...Will be testing it when the snow and mud goes away... The wood is mighty burley and all in all its just a beatifully plain rifle, not a deluxe Hoffman but its elegant, shows purity and its got class..It will kill a bunch of Buffalo. That Hoffman is the cat's meow and, as usual, it sounds like you have all well in hand, with the details and loads. Best wishes and good hunting.

You know, as horrid as the stock looks, one might question the integrity of the stock with all of that wood missing for the thumbhole. It's not like that rifle is chambered for a 243. I for one surely would not like to be around a stock that broke in two during the shot, let alone with your thumb wrapped in it.
