Why does there not appear to be more interest in this cartridge? Shoots a 500 grain bullet at over 2400 fps with more than 6500ft/lbs of energy. Great reputation for accuracy and shorter case should allow it to be used with a regular action. This is significantly better performance than a .458 Lott. Ammo is available for non-reloaders at a price that is not break-the-bank. What am I missing here??? Mike

I have wondered about this myself...the only thing I heard, but not sure where, was that it was a real problem to get to feed....other than that, not sure.

Uh ... it has a belt and a rebated rim, and that wonderful double-radiused shoulder?

Is it based on the 460 Weatherby? Does it only hold two down? My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Snowwolfe, Yes, it is based on a .460 Weatherby, magazine cap. differs from what action it is made on. But, on a singel-stack, two down is the usual. Over here at the Norwegian forum, we are making some wildcats, one of them a simmilar cartridge in .416, based on a .416 Rigby case, to get rid of the belt and rebate. If we get through, I'll post picks and info. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Mike, the 460 weatherby and 416 rigby cases (and their progeny) are extremely difficult to make feed in actions that have the wrong geometery, or are just not wide enough to use a proper stack. Case in point, ALL the current production 460 based Weatherby rifles are single stack. Every 30-378, 338-378, 378, 416 and 460 that comes from Weatherby is single stack. You would think that they would be people to have figured out the proper solution. converting them to single stack, while a solution, is not the worlds most elegant solution. A critical reason for this not be elegant is that in a "4 down" .473 magizine, that same height becomes 2 dowm in a .600 single stack. Weatherby offers a coffin box floorplate to get another one down. The 458 AR doesn't have these problems, and it was one-time offered with plans to not have a rebate, but the largest detractors of the rebate opted out of that solution, so now the brass is still cheap jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Because few gunsmiths have the talent to make a Model 70 or a Mauser 98 feed this cartridge. (Note: rehash of Jeffe's point.) It is far easier to built a .458 Lott, which has the advantage of greater magazine capacity.

Dan, On the 460 asquare vs the lott, you are dead on right. I think i lined out the points as to why it's easier, but perhaps didn't label it as such. And, frankly, it's easier and cheaper still to build the AR, get it to feed, and and function from a "Standard" length 7rem mag action than BUILDING to a lott... (though a factory lott is going to be the cheapest of them all) jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round?
