Hi Y'all,

I was down at Boise Gun Company, (208) 376-4440, and saw this CZ in 404J. It has a wood upgrade, and the finish is a rust blue. The trigger was pretty decent:

PS The wood looks better than in these crappy pictures. You can call and yell at Jason to send some better pictures.

I just knew we were in for trouble if we let lawndart cross the river and come east to the big city! You should have called me, I would have ridden along as the voice of reason. But, I might have had to have taken it home. You showed admirable restraint Yoda! Two crossbolts, very nice. How much was Gary asking for it, new or used?

Achtung! It has a 10" twist McGowen barrel just like mine! If you get addicted to 10" twist it can cause all kinds of trouble in associating with the extended-pinky-finger crowd. Just beware, and be ready to ignore criticism of the jealous slow-twisters.

It also holds 5 down in the box.

Though there is always the possibility of lemons and sour grapes with factory rifles, the .404 Jeffery in a CZ 550 Magnum Safari Classic is definitely the finest rifle that CZ-USA has ever made, and the least likely to cause any feeding or functioning issues. thumb

It is new. Jason (Gary's oldest son) ordered it for himself, but got off on another project.

The blue job is pretty decent, I really like the slow rust blue process.

Boise Gun Company is just a couple miles due North of St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center on Curtis road in Boise. I stop in on occasion to pay on a CZ Luxus in 416 Rigby that I got for an indecently low price. Jason wanted to do a full up custom 404J. When I took delivery of a 404J reamer from PT&G and called his bluff, he pussed out and went with the factory job.

This is a very nice rifle, but Fred's 404J on a converted model 70 300 RUM has been stuck in my head ever since I saw the first picture. I'm also determined to build one on a model 98, just because.

I agree with RIP about twist rate. A tight twist is no handicap with a traditional 404J load, and it is a definite help if you are using a longish monometal bullet.

Ten years ago, who of us seriously thought we could walk into a gunstore and buy a new factory made 404J for this kind of price??

Idaho Sharpshooter,

I'm sorry I didn't make it over to shoot the Gibbs the other week. My schedule is quieting down slightly now. If you get use of it again, please let me know. It would be adequate for the ground squirrels in the spring.

Considering a custom 404 Jeffery will probably run you in the neighborhood of $4k US and a goodly amount of waiting time, that's a steal!

I believe Jason had that done by the custom shop. In person it is much nicer than the normal factory hot blue.

lawndart,

you get to do that! I am going to be rather busy getting a 550/510/475/450 done on The Gibbs cylindrical case, and being pushed to do a 416 as well.
