Have you guys used any of the 45-70 300 grainers in your 458s m70 rifles?

My father got a new FN M70 in 458 in trade the other day at a gunshow. New in the box.

He asked me if I could research some loads for him. I plan on shooting it when I get back to Wyoming in October.

Very few 300 grain bullets were made for the .458 Winchester. They were made for the 45\70. The throat or leade of the .458 is a good .70 inches. This is how the Lott figures into this. Ken Waters spoke about this in his excellent Pet Loads book. He found that 350's were as low as he could go and still have accuracy. He found Reloder & was the best powder for the light bullet loads. I'll see what I can find. I might try a cast bullet load of around 405.

Dad's shoulder is titanium and 70 plus years old. He doesn't want a boomer, just a big bullet.

And here is another alternative for a new lighter weight CEB bullet:
they’re not as cheap as some bullets, about $2 each with Talon Tip, but they definitely get the job done. About half way down on the page of this thread you’ll find some necropsy photographs of this bullets performance on Kudu:

I'm loading Hornady 350s for my .458 Win Mag. Even the full house loads are quite manageable with good gun fits, and they are designed for Win Mag/Lott speeds so you can actually use them to shoot game animals. As others have pointed out, with the exception of the monometals, the 300 grainers are made for much lower velocities. If you want a great plinking load, Remington 405s, which are really cheap for a bullet that size, loaded with SR4759 are fantastic. I've also loaded Hornady 500 grain bullets with SR4759, but for plinking they are unnecessary and kinda expensive.

The Hornady 350s are in fact designed for the 458 Winchesters. They are good up to 2400 fps impact velocities, much beyond that they will start to come apart, and expand too much, penetration becoming an issue at that point with some things, larger plains game would come to mind. Smaller critters, not an issue.

405 Remington, excellent plinking bullet, relatively reasonable prices, very extremely accurate as well at most any velocity. I used this bullet to work up many different loads in 458 B&M, 458 Winchester and 458 Lott, then switch to the more expensive bullet to confirm. Not a hunting bullet above 1600 fps impacts however, it will go all to hell.

458 is a wonderful caliber, lot's of good choices of bullets available for ANY MISSION asked of it. All you got to do is "Know Thy Bullet" for the mission you wish to embark upon!
