I've been working up loads with my .458 and Hornady 300gr HP since I have a bunch of them. I have found a load from about 65gr to 67gr of 3031 that shows very good accuracy all the way through that range of loads.
The problem is the book says the velocity should be about 2250. I talked to Hornady and they said that bullet should have a max speed of 2100. It's a shame, I do like this load.
I guess I'll drag out he chronograph first and see what the speed really is. And then do wet newspaper tests if I have to.

i don't even do load dev without a chrono, unless i am just testing for "safe"

hornady 300gr HP shouldn't impact over 2000fps.. its a varmit bullet at 450 marlin speeds ...

I don't test anything without it going over the chrono. But I am lucky too, my chronos are set up permanently in my 50 yd indoor range. Don't have to drag them out every shooting session, and if I just want to test one load, just go out to the range and shoot, no set up time.

Many years ago I tested the 300 Hornady and 300 Remington at the same time in wet print. The Remington bullet came out on top and held together better than the Hornady, which surprised me at the time. Just about 2 weeks ago I ordered 500 of the Remingtons to develop a light load for my 458 B&Ms. I am shooting 57 IMR 4198 for 2017 fps in one of my 18 inch guns. Very light, accurate, easy to shoot.

Just a thought, but if the max speed is 2,100fps for bullet performance and your getting 2,250fps at the muzzle then what is the bullet velocity at the target or point of impact? Or is the bullet not capable of flight at 2,250fps due to centrifical forces?

experience is a tough teacher --
rem 405s, for example, are a decent bullet, all the way to 1800 FPS IMPACT velocity .. at 2000 fps, they are varmit bullets, and at 2500+ they varpoize

the hornady 300gr bullet will come apart on bone, and COULD result is lost game, if said elk/pig/moose/bear had a shoulder that could survive a 4" hole .. cuz it won't go no further.

I have used the 300 grain hornady at 2130fps for 29 years on deer in a 45/70. This is the fastest I would want to push it as you often get 1" expansion and core seperation on a shoulder joint shot. I have tried it once on black bear and once on wild boar with poor results. It just did not penetrate well enough on a shoulder shot after expanding. I then moved to the 350 grain RN for larger game and have been happy with it.

I have shot deer with the 300gr Sierra and the 300gr Remington bullet from a 45/70.

Performance has been perfect. I have only recovered one bullet, a Sierra that hit a deer at @35 yards nearly facing me with his head down.

The bullet hit where the neck joins the body.

The deer dropped to the shot, the bullet had expanded perfectly.
