I shot the Chatfield-Taylor for years, until the .416 Rem came about...Then I abandoned it, as the 416 Rem is on the same action, has more velocity, and operates at a tad less pressure...It also handles the 450 gr. Woodleigh bullets much better and it's not a wildcat round....A decision I have never regretted and you should at least consider if you intend to hunt foriegn countries....

Thanks for the replies fellers. I waited to build one until correct headstamped brass came out at a decent price. I started to do a .416 Rem but decided to buy a .416 Rem in a Ruger #1. I let one slip thru my hands a few months ago. Anyone shot buff with it? reflex264

the taylor is an excellent round, and for the money (call it FPS of a 400 gr .416 bullet/dollars) it's the second cheapest way to get a true big bore on a mauser.. the cheapest way is a 458 winmag.

with a 24" barrel, it's within 50fps of a 416 remington, loaded to the same pressure, with less kick.

here's the "super really cool" part.. you can alter the issue bottommetal and have it feed (like every other 2.5" magnum case that works in mauser) without droping a minimum of 400 bucks on custom bottommetal (that wont fit any off the shelf stock)

here's the ultra low buck way to a 416 taylor
1: find a gunsmith with the reamer (or who knows how to use a throater)
2: get a mauser action for whatever you want to spend .. 100 bucks...
3: get an AB barrel from midway.. 100 bucks
4: get some williams sights... 75 bucks
5: if you need a stock, boyds JRS .. 75 bucks
6: pay gunsmith 250 for barreling, boltface, feeding and cheap bluing
7: 50 bucks for pad and install

$700 bucks...

Yep, the "cheap" part helped out. I got 200 pieces of 458WM brass for free. Managed to find some dies for $25.00 and my favorite smith already had a reamer.

Since I already had the VZ-24 all tricked out in 35 Whelen, not much need to be done.

Recoil is very managable and it uses a fair amount less powder.

I went the cheap route and built one on a 110 Savage. I love the thing. Easily made brass from my large supply of 338 WM. I admit I don't really have any true need for a big bore but the Taylor is all I'd ever want in one.

It's funny. as soon as I saw the title of the thread I knew Atkinson would jump in an bad mouth the round. Everyones entitled to an opinion, but remember that if you don't get what you really want, you'll never really want what you got.

As far as ability on game, it's the bullet that does the work not the case it was fired from.

Not really rushing to Ray's defense, but someone chooses a 416 Rem., someone something else. Not much difference between any of them.

On the other hand, it ain't statistical thermodynamics to make any kind of rifle in any caliber. It seems most are just a pastime or hobby with no particular purpose in mind.

So whether one is "better" than another is rather a pointless argument, on both sides. Confused

Thanks for the replies fellers. I'm am building this one on a Mark X. It is a 7mm mag in nearly unfired condition so the bolt face is no problem. My eyes are not the greatest so I'm popping a scope on it (1x-3x variable) in good steel mounts. I have been playing with the .375 H&H and wanted a bolt gun with more oomph. reflex264

You'll love your Taylor. Try the 350 Swift A-Frames with RL 15 powder. I'm getting 2525 fps with 1 inch groups out of mine. It has a 24 inch barrel which seems perfect for the Taylor.
Take care,
Dave

PC,
sorry mate, i forgot about 416 taylor can't exceed 1400fps in oz... certainly the 404 was the coolest choice you could have possibly made... besides, other than being on the other side of the world, your bertam brass prices are upside down from us -pun intended-.. and should justify the 404.

nothing cooler than popping roos with a 404, and then following up with a 585 nyati to stop any serious charges

NBHunter,
Am I not allowed an opinnion, whatever anyone chooses is his business, but he asked and I replied, that is what this forum is all about...Why does that offend you...I have hunted and used both calibers extensively and gave him the benifit of my experience, right or wrong, its my opinnion for him to consider, what he or you does with that opinnion is up to you and him and has no effect what so ever on me.......
