Will be ordering a Ruger in 416 Rigby for next years hunt for Cape Buffalo in Zimbabwe. My question is should I just buy the Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 or is it worth the extra $ to buy the Swavorski, or the new LP7 1.5-6. I've been very happy with the VX IIIs I have on 2 other hunting rifles, a 40mm 3.5-10, and the 2.5-8.

Also thoughts on quick detach rings, I had been thinking of the Warne.

With the Leu 1.5-5, you can use low rings and take two mounted scopes.

Quit worriying about your choice of Leupold's and go ahead and install it. It'll hold up and is pretty accurate.

The series 111 with index matched lenses are great value for money. I recently sold a Swaro and bought a new Leupy, it is certainly better value dollar for dollar and has all the clarity needed for big game hunting.

Greetings: My 416 Rigby RSM sports a 1.5-5 Leuopold and it is a very nice combo. Mine has a special order reticle called the German Reticle. Cost thirty $ more and worth it I think. Cheers, Luke

Yep, 1.5-5 Leupold is the way to go,however, the 1.75-6E is a great choice as well. Dr.C

My CZ .416 Rigby wears a 1.5-5 Leupy IR scope. It has worked like gangbusters on Gembock, Hartebeast, Cape Buf, and American Bison. Is very good scope.

Cb- My Ruger .416 Rigby has a Leupold 1.5-5X VXIII w/ Warne QD Rings. Although I did not have to take the scope off in Africa, I practiced without it beforehand and found the Warne rings did a good job of returning to center when I remounted it. I had a very good gunsmith mount the scope with the rings to make sure they were trued up. The Leupold is a top quality scope with GREAT eye relief and I highly recommend it on your Ruger. Good luck on your Buffalo hunt. You have ordered a great rifle. What bullets will you use? I loaded up 400 gr A-frames over H4831sc and had excellent results. Thanks. Brian

Yep leupold is the way to go. Snowey river is right on. I used 104 gr of 4831 and 400 gr A Frames to take my buffalo in tanz a few years ago. No problems. Good luck. You have made a nice choice on rifles.

I like the 1.75-6x and have one with the old Premier Reticle German No.4 on my Ruger .416. It works and has held up to the pounding.

Great to get all the input. I'll order everything this week, including the warne rings and the VXIII. I like the idea of the german reticle too. The $ saved should help with the cost of ammo, reloading dies and components.

Keep you scope weight as light as possible to minimize inertia under recoil. I think the Ruger factory rings and a stubby screw driver work well.

The PH I hunted with last year said there is much less trouble with Leupold then any other scope.

Got the Ruger with the Leupold 1.5-5 and the Warne rings and sighted it in today. Great set up. Will be chatting with folks down the line about reloading. Thanks to all that commented, glad I saved $800 bucks for ammo, dies, etc.

I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6 on my RSM .416, it has been on there for around 300 rounds.

I'm more than happy with it. I got it on sale when I worked at a Gander Mountain in '01-'02

Change the recoil pad and replace the front sight with one from NECG and your good to go. Check the wood fit behind the tang to be sure its not to close. If the wood is touching the metal a split is very possible.

I use an old Leupold Compact 2.5X with post & crosshair reticle on my .416 Rigby, and a Leup. 2.5X-8X on my .375 H&H. But I hunt things like elk and big bears with the .375.....

I would take a hard look at Trijicon "Accu-Pt" 1,25-4x24. Unless you need a dedicated ....x56 scope to shoot after dusk from a high seat Swarovski is a waste of money.

I'll disagree with Paolo here. I have three Leupold 1.5-5 scopes mounted on a 375 H&H, a 416 Rigby and a 404 Jeffery, and they work just fine. But the Swarovski Z6 1-6 power scope is a better scope for all-around use: it has true 1 power-both-eyes-open ability, is brighter (24mm rather than 20mm) and goes to 6X. It's true they cost more, but they are more. I'm getting one.

I have a 1.1X4 S&B on my 416 rigby and love it..........
