I was hoping the woodliegh 500 grain soft nose and 500 grain solid would be a good match for my ruger magnum .458 lott, to keep me from buying bullets by the boxes and working up loads adnosium, and haveing something thats a quality set.. I read the soft nose is great, what say you about the solid in 500 grain .458 mag for accuracy, pennetration on big game,, dave

Woodleigh Solids are PRIMO.

As for the Softs, they do best if you drive them around 2300fps or less.

I love the Woodleigh softs for many applications and have used them extensively, never to fail. In particular for thinner skinned critters, they are a bit softer than say Swift A's and certainly barnes, and this can be great for many species. I have also used them on buff with great success.

I agree with NE450#2, keep them under 2300 fps. From 2100-2250 is near perfect.

I don't care for the solids however, there are many many superior solids on the market, and I won't use a round nose solid for anything. I refuse to get caught up in another solid battle, but round nose solids are not for me, regardless of who makes them. There are many good solids on the market with flat meplats that are far superior to any round nose made. End of story.

Ditto's Michael,

The new Hornady dgx solid in my book is the best solid for the buck on the market and is a real killer. My son used them on ele and buff last year. I would like the meplat to be somewhat larger but the compromise allows it to feed in any bolt rifle. My favorites are the GS solids at this time but I'd chamber a Hornady dgx any day, in fact they might become my favorite whenever Hornady gets the 500 N.E. bullets on the market.

My experience with Cape Buffalo:
You can't go wrong with Woodleigh bullets, softs or solids!
I've been using the Norma PH ammo.

The only one Woodleigh solid,I fired at the spine of a buff, exited 90 degrees from the point of impact.I would prefer a flat nose solid or use the 500gr TSX instead.

I haven't used the 500 grain Woodleighs out of my Lott but have taken buff and elephant with the 550 grain Woodleighs. I see no reason to expect anything but complete satisfaction from that bullet.

For the Lott, the 550grn Woodleighs are another great option.

I have loaded swiff solids for my 458 Lott. I have loaded the 550 by woodliegh. They do about 2150fps and the solids do 2350fps, the 500gr bullets do 2280fps. So I would say I'm ready for what ever.

I have used the Woodleigh 500 grain softs and solids in my .458 Lott and I have not had the slightest problem with them.

The solids have given good penetration and the softs good expansion.

The Cape buffalo I have shot with them have all died quickly.
