Guy's this thread is killing me. I mean I don't care whether you use a 1g gun or 10g gun, drink Bud or Hein have expensive taste or Beer pocket taste. What I do mind in this post and others on site's is that one uses one's wife as an excuse not to own or buy something. Either grow up and buy what you want or get a new wife. Hopefully one who appreciates a man. I'm sick of that excuse and if it were true in my life I sure wouldn't brag about is over the net. Maineguide

Are you suggesting to use a synthetic? I just bought an unfired 416 Rigby w/special selection stock w/a pillar bedded synthetic stock. Should I not use the wood stock at all? P.S. I hunt with my S/S Daytona, I wear my gold daytona in my Ferrari, should I get a Patek for my Aston Martin? There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

All my wife has asked me about $$$ since we were first married (near 16 years ago) is "did you tithe 10% to church off the top, and did you make the house payment?". A word of wisdom, marry a woman that makes about 10% more than you do annually, there's NEVER a question about what you do after meeting your obligations. That said, where are you guys buying those cheap $40K trucks, my Megacab Cummins-turbo with the Laramie (got to love those heated leather seat this time of year) was $52,000+ on the sticker. Actually the really ugly Dakota is the single shot...what a train wreck of good steel and walnut! Pass me one of those Borchardts please, or a good sidehammer Sharps. Even a #1 Ruger is better looking. Rich

I have seen three big bore Dakota 76s with nice wood and stocks split at the tangs, most recently a .450 last October in the Caprivi that was virtually splintered. And all with double cross-bolts! Don't ask me how the bedding could be so screwed up with double cross bolts that the tang would not just split, but splinter. But I've seen it with my own two eyes three times and I have heard of several others. Before I shot any big bore Dakota with a mother nature stock, I would send it to a gunsmith who knows how to bed a rifle for a thorough going over. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Oh well I guess that guns aren't the only thing you have bad taste in...... ......DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

I do believe Dakota refuses to use a secondary recoil lug on the barrel of their .450 Dakota rifles. Might get by with "proper bedding," what? Definitely hunt with the synthetic stock and save the wood for the showcase if it is a .450 Dakota. Maybe even the .416 Rigby. Wouldn't hurt anything except pride for some. Some of us know no shame. Now back to class warfare and tough love.

i dont know about the new dakotas but i saw and handled some of the early ones made in the late 80's or early 90's and they left a HELL of a lot to be desired in both wood and steel....especially for the asking price. all the gun rags just raved about them. i couldnt beleive how rough they were in every respect. kimbers at the time put them to shame. this stock splitting story doesnt surprise me one bit. DJ, don't make me send my rotty over to your house! If you really like the dakota SS or think any diesel truck engine is better, we now know that your taste is entirely in your mouth! HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Rich "...first your family, then your friends...".

so, besides the fact that Dakota furniture blows at times, can you mount a barreled action with a barrel recoil lug on a Mcmillan stock?

Rich, At least we agree on Rotts. One was the best dog I ever had..............DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

With the McMillan, you wouldn't need a second recoil lug on the barrel, but if you had a barreled action with a barrel lug to put into the McMillan stock, you certainly could. I have a McMillan on my BRNO ZKK 602 in .500A2/.510JAB, and I have a barrel recoil lug on that. I have sunk a hidden cross bolt of 1/4" allthread into the forearm with a bunch of hidden epoxy too.

You know, I never paid much attention to the single shot. As soon as I saw the price, I clicked elsewhere. I always dug the SxS's that have the rounded grip cap. Guess since its rounded, its not much of a cap at all. Along with looking at the Dakota, they had a couple shottys that had the rounded grip cap. Pretty nice.

It is always humorous to read “opinions†about Dakota rifles. Some claim they are inaccurate, others claim the stocks split with the first shot. Having owned and shot 4 Dakota rifles for over 10 years, I can certainly attest that none of mine are inaccurate nor have any of my Bastogne stocks failed. I have many hundred rounds through both my .416 Dakota and .450 Dakota without nary a complaint. Thems the facts and not third hand opinion...

Neat connection. I quite enjoy Paddywhack too. If you haven't already, try Black Bear Ale from the Kamloops brewery. Its a mild stout and dee-lish, as is Winter Pudding Ale at Earl's restaurants. Cheers, Canuck
