One of the things I forgot to order is a recoil pad. I want something that works. My gunsmith friend showed me a couple he had at his shop. He said the ones with solid edges don't work as well as others.
Any suggestions?

It's for a .458 win mag on a savage 110 with a wood stock.

I like the Pachmayr Decelerator; it's what I have on my .470 Capstick which generates more recoil than the .458 in rifles of the same weight.

As for your 'gunsmith friend', he is correct in that a vented pad like the Pachmayr F990 works very well, it is because it is thicker, not because it is vented.

Rob,

Do you have a guy who covers them, or do you upholster them yourself?

$35 for a pad
$50 for install
you "settled" for a "quality" rifle over less than $100 bucks?

truely, you are one of the most internally challenged persons I have ever had the "pleasure" of interacting with.

The Limbsaver is Very effective and butt ugly.

I've heard others say....and now I'm seeing it on mine....that eventually the pad starts to turn sticky or gooey. Don't know what causes it or what, if anything, can be done to halt it.

Sounds like the steering wheel on my car, and I HATE that. I'll steer clear of that particular pad.

i havent had the limbsaver melting problem.. i grind my own and don't wash them down with wd40 or anything.. might have been a bad batch, at one time..

seriously, though, the limbsaver, as compared to the f990, is like comparing mazarati to a yugo

My CZ Safari Classic had a very soft recoil pad that would pickup lint, dog hair whatever and was falling apart within 6 months. It did seem to work well though. I've used decelerators for 20 years, but went with the Pachmyer XLT because I thought it might soak up a little more recoil and needed the additional LOP. We'll see how it works when the rifle gets back ...

Smiler

I tested Limbsavers,Deaccelerators, Old English everything. The F990 Pad works better than all the rest. That Test was done on rifles with serious recoil! Yes its ugly but reshape it a lttle and cover it with leather and it looks like it came from Holland and Holland. Not a real challenge either.-Rob
