a friend of mine is looking at buying a remington 700 in 416 rem mag he dosnt have the funds to purchase a custom rifle say 5000$ and up (HE IS LEFT HANDED) he will be using the gun mainly for bear and boars with a little moose thrown in i have no exp with the 416 made by remington what is every 1s veiws on this rifle on a side note i bought a 416 rem mag in the blaser R93 safarie luxus and i toped it with a lepould 1.75x6 and i love it i am only using it for plains game and non dangerouse stuff so i am not worryed about the crf vs pf debate stuff i am happy with it and with the facotry ammo is extreamly accurate and feeds no matter how fast i work the bolt. even when used with hand loaded solids(barns 400 grainers)

I would buy a Ruger or a CZ in 416...better yet one can get a pretty nice simi custom from Brockman for a heck of a lot less than $5000. I would consider the new CZ Magnum Standard model in 416 Rem....It is an excellent factory rifle... I have never been a Remington fan on a big bore level...they have a definate safty problem and are not control feed rifles which I am a believer in..

Ray, he is left handed mate so his choices are a little less. I suppose the fact he is left handed leaves him with a remchester and given that I would try and push him down the path of finding a secondhand lefty M70 and having it rebarrelled. For that I do not think he will be in to far and he may be a happier chappy at the end of the tunnel. I just can't get my head around a rem 700 for large stuff, Rem 700's IMHO are meant for rabbits & foxes and growing tomatoes

Winchester sells a LH 416 Rem mag. USRAC - LH 416 Rem mag It is cheap at a mere $3000. I have shot a Remington Safari in 416 Rem mag. The rifle was a bit light in my opinion, the LOP was too short for me by over an inch, other than that is seemed to work fine. They still aren't what I would consider cheap, though. I think a better approach would be to buy a Savage LH and the get a 416 Remington mag barrel. This would be FAR FAR less expensive than buying a Remington Safari. Midwayusa sells 416 Taylor barrels currently. This would be a "short" chambered 416 Remington so you just need to get it reamed to proper depth and install the barrel on a Long Action Savage LH. Total cost ~ $700. At least I think you can get a 300 Ultra mag length lefty. Here is the link to the Savage barrel. Savage 416 Taylor (short chambered 416 Remington) Barrel Scott

Why not buy a magnum length left handed Win M70 or Ruger M77 and have it rebarreled? The M70 would be the easiest route, open up the rear bridge, buy a .375 length mag box, recut the bolt stop and ejector, and make it feed. Here's one on GunBroker: M70 Left Handed

Quote: The Rem 700 in .416 is notorious for feeding problems. It is probably the worst choice of all. Here is my ranking. from WORST to BEST ABSOLUTE WORST: Rem 700 - notorious feeding and extractor problems in .416 SECOND WORST: Weatherby Mark V Better than staying home: Ruger No. 1 OK CHOICE: Model 70 classic before being reworked OK for those who can stomach it: Blaser toy gun Good choice: Model 70 classic after being reworked BEST: left handed Granite Mountain Arms action ULTIMATE: Double rifle Better yet, your leftie friend should just buy himself a double for hogs. Those piggies run fast and a 9.3 x 74R would be the perfect medicine.
