I have seen a number of references to adding a recoil lug to the barrel of the larger bore CZ rifles. By what method is a lug attached; soldering, welding, etc..

Thanks, Mike

Joe,
you take darn good pictures

on the CZ dovetail, use some slow epoxy and screw it together as normal. Then solder the barrel lug on there.

After i saw story of broken McMillan stock at 600O verkill rifle i start think of this topic again. My rifle in this 600OK caliber going to gunsmith at next week. So then its easy add this extra recoil lug to rifle so what people think here is it necessary or not? So long i had shoot without and i didnt have any problem but now is good time add it if need.

That would be a real trick to get the solder to flow with that epoxy in the joint. Are you really saying to screw it, epoxy it and then solder the lug on there?

You had better add a good barrel mounted recoil lug now or I guarantee you you will break your stock. Trust me as I only invented the cartridge and perfected the rifle configuration!
I described exactly how to make a recoil lug and it should be contoured to match your barrel diameter and then screwed and soldered in place . Not hard for any competent gunsmith to do. Don't try and talk yourselves into believing this isn't necessary cause it is. -Rob

The only reason I know of to Not put an under barrel recoil lug on a big bore is. You want a new stock. Or, you like broken stocks.

They really are necessary.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Pardon my ignorance on this subject but does CZ not machine a recoil lug integral with barrel/ rear sight?

Yes original CZ550 magnum rifle have recoil lug under rear sight base but now is question of same rifle with new barrel. And special bigger caliber barrel, does it need extra recoil lug or not.

Let's all speak the same proper English ! Smiler
The barrel thread is epoxied to the receiver . A lug is put into a dovetail and Brazed with a bronze or silver braze not low temperature "silver solder" [ 400 F]
In the upper world "bronzed " means plated with bronze !

In my early days we took everything with a 30-06 ,didn' have to worry !! 2020 wave

Barrel threads are only epoxied into receivers by idiots. Barrel mounted recoil lugs are not epoxied but are in fact soldered onto barrels. high temp solder works perfectly. Dovetails are not needed and only used by CZ or other el-cheapo idiots. Give me a break with all this crap!this isn't hard it's just common sense engineering and about 150 years of real world experience not internet expert imagination.-Rob

The CZ barrels on larger calibre come with an integral barrel, not a dovetail. The barrel and rear-sight island are machined from the original barrel while the contour is being made.

McGowan barrels does this on request and I had my 500AccRel Nyati cut with an integral barrel lug. No soldering or extra heat is necessary and the lug is the most solid imaginable. The subjective side of the equation comes when a person decides how to bed and anchor the barrel lug in the forearm.

Obviously, this note does not answer the question about how to add a barrel lug to a lug-less CZ barrel. But for designing a barrel and ordering a barrel, McGowan provides an excellent service.

I used to buy 2" barrel blanks from PAC-nor and CNC machine in the whole sight island and forward barrel lug. Not trivial to do but very impressive ultimately. On normal barrels I've found it easiest to machine the lug and screw it in place to easily ensure it's centered, then high temp solder it and the screws into the barrel. It works exceeding well and none I've ever made has ever broken off or loosened. -Rob
