I would like to know from gays that hunt in Africa,what do they think is the most popular PH rifle used on DG and way.

The PH is a lisenced professional hunter, not a client. Just in case there is some confusion in terminology here.

I read a survey result from among PH and seems a typical answer was that many prefered 416 class round for all personal hunting including elephant - but like to carry something like 458 cal or larger when with a client.

Reasoning being that with skill and confidence no advantage to over 416 for personal use. The bigger gun was either too impress the client or expected by the client. Or the PH wanted added stopping(or turning, not the same thing) power too compensate for poor client shooting.

The cause of poor client shooting being as often as not due to his being over gunned.

Thats based on reading, no personal experience to backup any of the above.

There is a hunting forum on AR, where this topic has been well discussed and debated.

There are several polls taken amoung AR members (as opposed to PH). You might search the archives. As you can imaging, opinions vary....

And there are some african licensed PH that take part in the discussion on the hunting forum.

boddington's book, safari rifles, says the client should use a 375... or any rifle that they are comfortable and shoot well .. and the lott is the up and commer for PHs, with various 416s and 375s a norm ... no clear "winner", as its a plurality .. though 375hh, 416 rem or rigby, 458 winmag and lott .. then everything else

My DG Phs have crried the folowing calibers:
375 H&H, 450/400 3 1/4", 416 Rigby and 470 Nitro.

What I'm seeing on Google and around is that .458 Win. Mag. or Lott is the most popular caliber in Africa for DG. Evidently a favorite with the PH's.
