Jeffesso,

later on this year I may be interested in buying a complated .600 OK action from AHR at $1250.00US. That would equate to around $2500AUS. Do you think there is a possibility of having one of these exported to Aus or would it be better to get my smith to make it (he made my .585) ??

PC,

Bringing the gun or action in is not the big deal you may think.

The main disadvantage to bringing the gun in is costs but I don't think this will apply to AHR rifles.

For example, if you brought a Model 70 or Weatherby Mark V in, the problem you face is that you don't buy the rifle at as good a price as do Winchester Australia or Nioa Trading for Weatherby.

Check out a good price in the US of A for a Model 70, then add shipping costs plus at least 30% import tax, plus inurance ans then to the exchange rate and I think it will come out at a fair bit more than the same rifle costs here that has been brought in by Winchester Australia.

But I don't imagine AHR have the same sort of pricing structures that Winchester and Weatherbt have.

PC- I'd buy a completed action from AHR. It's probably cheaper than having it done in OZ, although your gunsmith know what he's doing! I will have an extra barrel and maybe a set of dies that I can send your way.-Rob

why couldnt we just use 600 N.E. brass... turn the rim off of it, strait'n it, and neck it back down like the 585?

I may be ineterested Rob, I am not sure yet. I have so much to do this year. It would work out cheaper to go the AHR option, but hey my smiths's work is top notch.

At the moment on my "gun program" I need to purchase 2x leupold scopes, I have 2 sets of talley QD's on the way at a cost of around 450-500AUS. I have ordered a 9.3x62 cz (I can't read all this talk on here about this caliber and not have one) and I also want a cz 550 in .458 win mag to make a lott out of. The .338 lapua is something else I want. And I wish to get up to either the Gulf or NT for a donkey & camel + some fishing. Were all the cash is coming for this I have no idea [Big Grin] Finally I want a .600 OK [Frown]

When you know about those dies & barrel just drop us a line Rob. As they can always be stored for later on.

In my .500 at 2400fps using 113 grains RL-15 the recoil velocity is ~25fps @115 ft/lbs, this is shootable without flinching.
I have fired it at 2485 using 118 grains (?) for 26.7fps @125 ft/lbs. That is max and not comfortable.

You boys are going to get seriously stomped, the recoil velocity is going to be what gets you.

Roger!

Is the 190 grain load a MAX load for the .600 Overkill??? Do you have a .600 OK? How is the recoil?

Thanks!

Overkill,

I just pulled those figures out of the air. I looked in A-Square's manual for the .600 Nitro Express and interpolated based on their loads. I have no idea if it is max or even close to it, those numbers are there for a "ball-park" guess-timate of what the rifle will be capable of. The mass of 14 pounds is taken from the AHR site and the mathematics was done by Excel and taken from A-Square's manual too.
I like using the Excel since I can change one variable and drag it down column and all my figures change. Much easier than hand calculating all the time.

From my experience, a Vias Brake will tame the beast down to the 150 Ft/lb recoil level. This is what a unbraked 585 NYATI dishes out and is "managable". I hope! In any event as I've said before, I think this cartridge will self limit at around 2200 fps which is well above the .600 NE level. H414 would appear to be the powder of choice for full power. Remember, in any of these very large cases, you can load slow burning powder like H50BMG and get the velocities down to a managable level and still have nearly full case capacity..-Rob

If I only want to push 900 grains at 2000 fps out of a 14 pound rifle, do you think I need a brake?

500grains!

Yes I think that you would need a brake but it is fun to hear what MAX velocity that is possible in the .600 OK???

I will take a stab at it.

I think the max velocity is 2550 before you get stick case extraction.

That a Human can hold onto, without a brake, in a 13# gun, for 3 shots? I dunno, what's the effective velocity of the same recoil as the flying 577 t-rex? I think that's about all a person can handle.... anyone wanna go for 10 rounds, in 2 mins? Without dropping the rifle, o''course

I'm really not sure of what Max velocity would be. Using Quickload I was able to find a H414 load that hit 2400 fps with a 900 gr bullet. Quickload tends to be very conservative and we are using three groove barrels which should operate at lower pressures so I don't know. The max pressure this case is designed for is about 53,000 psi, while the old 600 NE maxed out at 30,000 psi or so ( 900 gr bullet at 1950fps). 2500fps might be approached or even exceeded, but not by me! I've shot 900 gr bullets at 2650 fps out of a 20lb rifle with a Vias break and it was tolerable. I doubt I could shoot 10 rounds quickly, but there was no question of loss of gun control. That load in a 13lb rifle might literally be physically dangerous. Personally, there is No way I'm gonna shoot anything above a 600NE equivalent load in an unbraked gun!-Rob

DaggaRon,

Is it possible for recoil to tear or damage a rotator cuff if the rifle is held properly?

500grains,
Of course proper technique and good physical condition will minimize chances of injury, but,
yes it is possible, especially with the 600 OK [Eek!] . Hopefully just a rotator cuff strain or partial tear that will heal with rest and therapy.

If it hurts don't do that until it is healed.

Switch to the 223 for plinking until healed.

X-ray to rule out fracture or calcific tendonitis ... Physical therapy and nonsteroidals ... steroids ... orthhopedic surgery consultation ... MRI or arthrogram if a surgically repairable tear is suspected ... the knife: to be avoided except as last resort, or if you are a professional football quarterback and it is your throwing arm and you gotta make training camp this spring.
