The A2 has a sharper shoulder and less taper, slightly blown out, holds a couple more grains of powder. The Wells case is identical to the Weatherby except for the mouth. Either case is easy to fireform using Weatherby brass. 510 Wells:

other than being different rounds/headspace/etc, they are as close to the same except for a few letters in the names!!

same performance, nearly the same capaciy, and both are far far easier than a gibbs or jeffe for feeding and feeding (case cost)

It is a good thing that only AR and some other forums hate Wbys and reckon they jam every second shot otherwise no 378 based Wbys would be sold then there would be no brass Big Grin

The 500 A-Square is a SAAMI standard cartridge, while the 510 Wells is considered a wildcat.

This is a really old discussion but I'll respond anyway. The cartridges are the same except the A-square's shoulder is about .100" higher on the case and therefore has a shorter neck.

The .500a2 is a great cartridge developed by the despicable A Alpin ( spit). The 520 wells is virtually identical and developed by a great gunsmith (wells). Either is a great step up for most people and a "Gateway " cartridge to real stoppers like the .600ok!-Rob

Dave Young, the gunsmith who did my 500a2, had recently built a 510 Wells for a customer who took a nice cape buffalo with it. Although there is very little difference between the two, I chose the a2 because I figured it had greater longevity. Proper head stamped brass is a bit easier to obtain and actually a little cheaper, from Jamison anyway. I believe the 510 Wells is a 460 Wby necked to .510 with no other changes while the 500a2 has .100 longer body and holds a couple more grains of powder w, which of course means nothing. Anyway, the .510 Wells can be shot/fire formed in an a2 chamber but not vice versa. Dave says that the 570 gr TSX @ 2500 leaves a fist size exit hole in a bison that needs to be seen to be appreciated! He said my .458 would be a popcorn fart in comparison to full on 500/510 loads and I believe him. Rob, I reckon a 600 ok would be the logical next step and I hope to have one in hand by this time next year. It's the biggest thing that is affordable for me and that a guy can regularly buy good bullets for. The 700's would be excessive for me in all ways.

To remind everyone, the 500a2 is the Simpliest conversion possible starting with a 416 Rigby CZ 550. It flat works reliably even when done on a budget! By far the cheapest way into a respectable big bore! That has been my experience and I have made a few of them. Great cartridge and highly recommended for its versatility. The wells would probably work just as well but I never fooled with it! -Rob

SR, you're right...the 600 OK is about the top of the heap, from a cost and performance standpoint. I had the 8th 700 AHR built by Wayne. It is a monster of a rifle, but available bullets are scarce and expensive. Plus, to drive the bullet fast enough for reliable penetration, it would become near impossible to stand behind the gun without using that huge X-Brake. I've had 2 or 3 600 OK rifles, and can shoot them at 2,250 fps or so without a brake. That's definitely the way to go.

Well there is always the 12gaFH or the .700RLG if you want the max in shoulder fireable big bores. I too think the .6000k is the most versatile! You can launch 750gr bullets at 2700 fps or 900gr bullets at 2400 and still control it! AHR has the build perfected!-Rob

I imagine the 600 would be my stopping point and would round out my rifle battery nicely. Then again, I thought that about my 458 Lott! I got a 500 a2 and immediately thought BIGGER! BADDER! BETTER! We'll see but from the videos I've seen, a full power 600 ok load is about all the recoil a guy can take from a from a sporting rifle. Even my a2 can get away from me when shooting quickly or from awkward positions and may be the upper limit (for me anyway) for an all purpose DGR. A lot of grown men are afraid to shoot it! The 600ok is a fire breathing monster that's suited for jurassic park! I'd probably load it in the 600ne range or up to maybe 2150. Of course I'd keep a few 2400 fps rounds for "friends" to shoot! Anyway, I think the 600ok will be my next big bore. I've been debating on whether to get it or the 585he but I guess I might as well go all the way and do a .62 cal. There's a lot to like about the .585 though and I could easily see myself with both!!!
