Things went well today with my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. The rifle functioned as it should feeding and extracting with no issues. I used loads on the light side (535g Woodleigh Soft Points at approx. 2100 fps) to start out with. Since my range is under construction, I really couldn't sight it in today, so I only shot 10 rounds, 5 with irons and 5 with my Leupold 1.5 - 5x. Next time I'll load enough rounds to sight in both irons and the scope and shoot for groups and chronograph. Recoil was fine both offhand and from the bench, no shoulder bruises, no headaches, no eyebrow cut ...

Smiler

Chuck

Chuck

Chuck,

What was the load you were using for the 2100 fps if you do not mind me asking?

Hi, I got the load from Geoff McDonald of Woodleigh. I haven't chronographed it yet, so it could be slower. Here's the text from his message:

*********************************************

A good light load is

90 grains H4895 for about 2100 fps.

Regards,

Geoff McDonald.

It took 103gr to get that Woodleigh to 2240fps for me (26" barrel). I suspect your case fill was relatively low, right? Chrony the load and get back with us, thanks.

I susspect the 535g Woodleigh with 90g of H4895 is lower than 2100 fps myself. My "Any Shot You Want Book" claims 101g of H4895 will get a 570g solid to 2300 fps. I'll try and chronograph it this week, then work my way up. This is my deer / elk load though. I plan to use the 570g TSXs for bigger stuff at around 2300 fps if I can shoot well at that recoil level.

chuck375,

That would make hell of an elk load, works real good on buffalo too!! Listen to the voice of experience here, it really is over the top for deer (don't ask how I know I just know Big Grin ). Glad you like your new fifty and welcome to the club.

That load will be great for deer . . If you can ,either right behind the ear , or a good lung shot .. You hunt deer and elk with your elephant gun it will make you a better shot on them , elephants , and everything else ....

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Got my 500 Jeffery sighted in today. No chronograph, that will be next time. 20 rounds from the bench, ouch lol. Actually no headache, maybe a bruise, we''ll see tomorrow. Shooting got better as the morning went on, so that's a good sign lol. I'm sighted in dead on at 25 yards and about 2" high at 100 which is what I was aiming for. Beginning to get comfortable with the rifle. Loads are nowhere near full power (535g at ~ 2000 fps).

Ovny, we'll try and get some video of my 16 year old blowing up some dangerous water jugs with it next time. No one wants to see a 60 year old man on video ... lol

Here's a photo with my Leupold and rear sights on! My Lee Classic turret, drilled and tapped for the larger dies, which works great and way cheaper than a new press which I didn't have room for. Finally my "Maxi-Pad" for bench shooting. It's a Past shoulder recoil pad velcro'd onto a Limbsaver shoulder recoil pad ... That's my son's 73 Mustang Convertible / 351 Cleveland in the back which we restored together.

Chuck

As you wish my friend, but I just want to enjoy seeing the owner of the beautiful rifle in the photograph. I'll try to record a video with a mobile phone, the day I take my Lott.

Best regards,

Oscar

Loaded up some 535g Woodleighs and 570g TSX's with H4895. Shot all loads both with and without a scope, all water jugs and water bottles DRT (Dead Right There) lol! Still have a ways to go. Chronographed all three loads, the 570g TSX's only got up to just over 2100 fps, going to switch to RL-15. I think shooting the 570g TSX's at 2300 fps should be a good all around load. Still no problem shooting from the bench with a scope, off hand recoil is not an issue at all. My two friends loved it!
