If the .458 Lott is the quintessential big bore round (e.g. you don't need anything else for what's available to hunt today) why does everyone fool around with all of these other rounds that take exotic actions, kick like mules, $100 for a round of ammo, etc. etc. bewildered

The 458 lott is very effective and versatile, but for some it's plain vanilla. Using wildcats or english express rounds and exotic custom rifles, adds to the experience.

Same reason folks take 400 hp cars and add blowers, turbos, nitros et all to get 1000 hp.

From a practical standpoint, yes 458 lott gets the best bang for the buck.

For SOME, it is the challenge to master the next level of recoil. clap (Warning)This can be come addictive.

Mastering the 80 to 115+ lbs of recoil that these rounds produce, takes a lot of training and mental conditioning to place your shot quickly and accurately. Without developing bad habits, ie: flinching, jerking the trigger, etc.

Any way, they always produce a "Moving experiance" rotflmo

Have played with 458 Lotts built on Sakos, Montanas, Rugers, Savages, and Weatherbys. Certain amount of fun.

Bigger though is better, e.g., 470 Capstick, 500 Nitro Express, 500 A-Square, 550 Magnum, 585 Nyati...

At the other end, the 14/221 Walker is fun.

I vote that the lott is the "best" bigbore one can buy, especially if one is a reloader and this is one's paramount bigbore.
cheap to feed
cheap to feed
highest SD in any standard hunting bullet .341 for the 500gr

dramatic penetration, performance

CHEAP TO FEED

and having a bigbore that you can't shoot a bunch, if it's your first heavy, remingong 405gr bullets will train you for recol

Why build bigger ones?
heck, why have anything newer or bigger than an 8x57

then again, why even use catridges, after all, a 45 caliber muzzle loader will do the trick.....
,,,,
of course, one could use a stick!!!

seriously, though, bigger bullets make bigger holes

My favorites will always be XXX Nitro Express .... followed by XXX H&H , no data, no test reports, no ballistics... I love them, and love the way correct and properly designed guns shoot these cartridges. I will find a way to utilize them for any game I ever want to hunt... that doesn't mean I won't get a T-Rex, 404 Jefferey, Lott, Nyati, Mbogo or a host of others... hunting is a small part of my actual shooting... so I make the most of it, and big pounders are fun..

You should have seen and heard all the guys who shot my double rifle... except one person who was too scared to shoot it, cause he would have had to go by one. Most hit the targets at 75yds, open sights, no sticks, and all were suprised how mild mannered it was.. kick is just above a light 12 ga non auto gun..

I agree with Jeffe in that one can also use 458 Winchester ammo for general practice, especially with relatively light bullets to help reduce recoil and make the session more enjoyable.

The only issue that I have with the Lott is the heavy recoil. A 458 Winchester, especially with the Hornady Heavy Magnum load, which approaches the Lott, has sufficient recoil for me.

Winnie chambered turnbolt in .375 H&H before WWII, so I would say someone probably necked this number up to .45 in 1947-1950? Confused

Alf,

This isn't an African Hunting forum! Thus, from a practical standpoint, the 458 Lott offers the greatest amount of power per dollar.

As to it being the ultimate African big game round, I'm sure most of us would agree that that is not the case, for a variety of reasons.
