What is the biggest cartridge available that can be rebarreled/chambered in the Ruger No. 1?Is it possible to chamber the 585 Nyati in the Ruger?  To be great, is to be misunderstood. | ||

For a rimmed cartridge it is the .577 Nitro Express, requiring safety slide modification so the rim will clear it on loading and ejecting. The .585 Nyati is a .577 NE with the rim turned down and an extractor groove cut. Sure it could be done, as surely as other rebated cartridges have been done. You really ought to do a 460 Weatherby first though, to break yourself in gradually. This might knock some sense into you before proceeding to the .585 Nyati. Ross Seyfried, the designer himself, said the .585 Nyati was a "nightmare." | |||

The .585 Nyati is a handfull for sure, I have one built on a Brno 602 .375 H&H, it weigh's 14.5 pounds has three mercure recoil reducers in the stock 25"tobler barrel with a 3"removeable answer style break holds three down and is a power house. I use 650 gr woodleigh .577 Black Powder projectiles to gget some expansion as they have a reduced impact rating which makes them better for splat effect, they are infront of 150 gr of AR2209 (IMR4350). I like mine as it's different and fun to pull out at times    | |||

Forrest, I handled that Ruger No.1 600 JDJ at a gun show in Rapid City, SD last year. It is pretty, and still no takers? The 600 JDJ is a necked up to .620 caliber version of the .577 NE with minimum taper, hence does not violate the .577 NE Max for Ruger No.1 rule, eh? The base/head diameter of the .577 NE is .662", with rim diameter of .750". | |||

While its possible to build a 585 Nyati on a Ruger #1, I'd think about it and lay down till the idea went away! You need at least 13lbs for a NYATI. Unless your gonna drill some big holes and fill them with SHOT or Carbide and epoxy I don't see how your going to add enough weight and balance it properly. Remember, barrels with big holes weigh much less than barrels with little holes generally.I'd also be very concerned about the recoil shattering the Ruger stock in short order too. You'll also need a very efficient Muzzel brake to have any hope of taming that beast. Finally, you do know how to hang on to a NYATI don't you? Good point about the torque. It might twist the Ruger forend off its hanger. That 600 JDJ has only been fired "a couple times." The stock has not cracked yet, the forearm is still attached, and it has a very large muzzle brake on it. | |||

All very good points guys, maybe Ill just think about it for awhile I definatelly would not want my stock to crack on this rifle, because this gun is just flawless and I don't want to mess it up. Maybe Ill go with a 577 Nitro instead. To be great, is to be misunderstood. | |||

One of these days going to put my 510 HE a rimmed case 3.6 in long in a #1. It is of base diameter size that is more compatible than a Nyati, in relation to barrel thread diameter. It will get 10-12,000 ft lbs.Will have stock setup with barrel ring in forearm like my other guns. Weighted properly, 16 lbs, with long barrel, 50% slower twist barrel, will be manageable. Tested it in 16 lb Enfield 7 years ago, wasn't any worse than 12GA FH Savage. MZEE WA SIKU | |||

If you want a NYATI build it on a CZ550, and use a Mcmillan synthetic stock with lots of steelbedding, Mercury recoil reducers. It probably wont cost much more than trying to get a Number one to work. You also know that the existing reamer dimensions are wrong in the neck area for NYATI reamers from JGS or DM? The chamber won't work reliably with anybody's brass including Hornebers. Unless you have a lathe and can mandrel turn your brass to fit the chamber its not going to fit. I have a custom neck reamer that will correct the problem. When you see a 585 NYATI for sale, ask the owner how many times he's shot it. NOT MANY! Been there and done that. There was a guy here who did a .577NE on a Number one a few years ago and I think he kept it to the 1950fps level with 750 gr slugs. He sold it after awhile. I don't remember if he had to replace his stock or not. Finally, that brake on the .600JDJ has got to be the least efficient and noisy design possible. You want a VIAS style brake that vents the gas in a 360 pattern with internal chambers machined into it. That design will reduce recoil nearly 50% with HIGH Pressure cartridges. Unfortunately, the .577NE or .600NE isn't a high pressure cartridge so expect much less Brake effect. ITS GONNA HURT and ITS GONNA TORQUE HARD!
