We had pretty well decided on the 9.3x62 for Heathers bigger of her two guns and I thought
all was good.

Then I asked her to read a couple of articles, one by Gregor Woods from Man magazine and one
by Harold Wolf.To get her opinion and thoughts on the 404 Jeffery for me.I was wanting a
little help justifying the extra money and effort to go with the 404 instead of the .375H&H.
That part worked, I'm about 99% for sure on the 404.

But the surprise was when after reading them, she looked over and said "I want a 404 Jeffery,
it said the recoil is not bad, girls can shoot it and it will knock anything over I need to with it".
OK, I wasn't expecting that! The articles were talking about 400gn bullets at 2150 to 2200fps.

So in looking up old posts on the 404 Jeffry I ran across comments on the 10.75x68. So I started
reading up on it. It sounds rather interesting.

If I understand this correctly, the 10.75x68 will fit in a M98 action without a lot of surgery,
we can use the Sunny-Hill 30-06 size bottom metal, it should hold 4 down, Woodleigh's 347gn bullets
can be loaded to 2300-2350fps,and the 400gn bullets at 2150-2200fps. She would have a gun in an interesting caliber with "character".It would basically duplicate the 450-400 with 400gn bullets.

Will the 347gn bullets work for all around use? The SD is .277 will that be a problem? She probably
won't need to shoot the 400gn bullets. Elephants are not on the intended list for her.

The H&H style stock will be made to fit her.

Thoughts, opinions, comments, ideas?

Allen

The 10.75 is a snap for a conversion on a M-98 Mauser. I just sold one..It is a great gun for the ladies or young people...A 400 gr. bullet at 2100 FPS. Brass from Horneber, bullets from anyone that stocks .423 (404 caliber)..

I couldn't tell any difference in recoil between the 10.75x68 and the 9.3x62..

I think the 10.75 is the jewell of Africa, its light and easy to pack, recoil is acceptable by most, it holds 4 down and one in the tube..I like to use the 350 gr. Monolithics at 2300 plus FPS, and that combo kills buffalo quite well.....

It has never received its proper respect, it just has a lot going for it..

Another option is to build a light .404 Jeffery's and load it down or for that matter buy a .416 REm and load it to 2100 FPS..You have a world of options if you handload...

The 10.75 has some pluses I suppose, its something different, it makes for some really good conversation around the campfire, has nostalgia up the ying yang and you will probably become part of a very exclusive group of gentlemen who have knowledge beyond those poor souls that spend eternity with such mundane calibers as the 30-06, 375 H&H, 416 Rem and other such common varity calibers! beer

Great! Thanks Ray,
That is kind of of what I thought I wanted to verify.

Heather and I both want something vintage, classic, with some character and nostalgia.

Hand loading is not an issue at all on any of our guns. That's a big part of the enjoyment of having and shooting them.

The 30-06, 416 Rem just don't interest me at all. Not based on any lack of performance. It's just that they don't,well.. stir my soul or make my Heart go Pitter Patter. Even the .375H&H
feels much more common to me now.I'm not putting the .375H&H down. It just isn't as fascinating to me now.

As it stands I believe we are going to go with a 6.5x57 Mauser for each of us(Heather's is a 1910 Mex, mine a M98) the 404Jeffery for me and the 10.75x68 for Heather (both on M98s).

hey Allen, my wife's name is Heather too. She can't quite take .30-06 recoil...any tips? She loves to hunt with me but .308 Win. is about max for her and kinda on the high side. She really wants to be out there with me and so far the .223 has been ok. I don't even like the .223 for white-tail even though it is legal in TX. How did you get your wife into big bores? Any help appreciated. Confused

It is a peach, that 10,75!
I would use Woodleights 350 in stead of the 347, as the first one takes up more room in the case if seated to the cannelure. have your smith fix the freebore if necesary - it will also give you the chanse to seat 400 grs at the cannelure. Many of theese chambers have a huge freebore anyway, but have it checked with the smith before chambering.
