I've been to Tanzania once and may never return to Africa. Nonetheless, I feel a burning desire to buy a .458 Lott. Likely a cz550. I already have the cz550 in .375 H&H. I don't even hunt much beyond birds. PLEASE TELL ME WHY!

Please refrain from posting any "Freudian" explanations.

Once " YOU " separate the WANT from the NEED !.

You'll come around to your senses !.

I never needed anything larger than the .375 H&H and 80% of what I shot was with a 7mm RM , the other 17% I used my .338 WM . Dead is Dead .

Kicking the crap out of myself is just overkill !.

You "want" a Lott because a .458 AR is too much trouble to build right now Wink

The big bores are an awful lot of fun to shoot once you learn proper shooting form. There are alot more "elephant guns" sold today than elephant hunts, but it's nice to know that should the chance ever present itself that you have a weapon that's up to the challenge.

The Lott is a great choice. Brass is readily available and reasonably priced and you have a wide selection of bullets from cheap plinkers to supr premium killers. Also a good selection of factory ammo if you choose to go that route.

Why, you ask? Because. Big Grin Because you want one is a good enough reason in my humble opinion.

because you can. It's an accomplishment to shoot a real big bore rifle accurately and swiftly.

I had an AMA Expert License for a couple years. There's a real adrenaline rush in controlling something on the ragged edge.

Just buy it and be happy taking the challenge.

LOL, if the question was "why do i want to BUILD a 458 lott" I would tell you to build the 458 AR, as the AR goes on standard actions and outruns the lott.

If you want to BUY a CZ in 458 lott, the question is "why not" ...

Oh, to build a 458 AR, 500 for a ruger, 600 for Pacnor to build, blue, and put your sights on it,,, mebbe slightly less for IT&D/Douglas or McGowen...

Just because is enough, buy the CZ and enjoy it. I bought a CZ 550 last summer in 458 Lott with dual crossbolts and a nice bedded walnut stock at a Gandermountain store in Northwest Houston for $869- couldn't pass it up. Lott's of fun. Rodney.

Because you know that sometime somewhere you'll run across something that needs a .458 hole through it and you might not have your .45-70 home from the cleaners. Wink

Mine is a Parker Hale .458 WM that I had reamed to Lott length. One hole groups at 50 yards using the iron sights, it'll drill a half inch hole through a railroad tie using the Hornady FMJ projectile and it's just plain fun to shoot!

You need one.

Indeed !

Because you haven't looked hard enough, bigger, better and more efficient cals on that action size out there than a 458 Lott

.........Ya , I can,t figure out why I like mine so much , but I sure do .........When I first got it I had all kinds of things planned out to build from it ....All I did was make the stock fit me perfactly and shoot it ........... . Every time I take it shooting , which is at least once a week all this winter,,,,, I like it more ... ...........I have other big bores that I,ve killed lots of game with ,,and I have had and very much want other and larger bigbores ...............A big part of it is the CZ550 rifle ......It is just such an execellent piece of equipment ............................The Barnes book says it won,t do 2900 fps with a 300 gr X bullet but I don,t know why ....Course it says the 458 Win mag won,t go 2700 fps with a 300 gr X bullet ....But it does , quite easily .......................................For a general purpose blasting and hunting load .the 350 gr Speer .458 bullet with the little rounded flat nose ,.is pretty ideal when you consider the bullets toughness and economy .. I drive them @ 2700 fps from my CZ , but they can be slowed down to 2500 fps and be a low pressure , Hard hitting , fun shooting , all around load ..............................Just some thots

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Yes, like my .450 Ackley -- but not practical because there really isn't any commercially available ammo (except for A-Square)...... Can't go wrong with a Lott!! It is a round that doesn't disapoint.

Just pray you don't end up with my curse. Seems every time I build a rifle for a specific purpose, that animal moves to a different part of the earth. I've built two dangerous game rifles and haven't seen an elephant or lion in Colorado since. Well...maybe at the zoo.

Got an M70 458 Lott in great shape if you don't find your CZ, although I do recall seeing one on classifieds a few days back.

I think it's generally the result of having too much discretionary income, although in your case, since you already have a .375, the wife and kids may be starving in the snow right now for all I know. Smiler

1. Because it kicks ass on DG.

2. Because it is a stopper, not just a "client cartridge".

3. Because you can load it with 400 grain pointed bullets and shoot elk at 350 yards.

4. Because you can load it up with cast bullets or 45-70 bullets for cheap practice or rabbit hunting.

Because you never know when a few elephants might escape from the circus that just stopped in your town.

I stopped asking questions like "why do I want this" or "do I need this" a long time ago. It's enough that you just want it so long as you have the money. I have a lot of guns I rarely use and don't really need. They bring me happiness and that's reason enough for me to have them.

There is almost certainly a Ruger #1 in my future. It won't be a Lott though. More likely a short, lite, and gorgeous .30-06!

Hello citori:

You are in my position, I have a Remington 700 in caliber 338 WM, I have a Ceska 550 in the venerable 375 H & H Magnum and now I'm saving money to buy a Ceska in the cartridge 458 Lott . I never go to Africa, I can not spend what it costs a safari. Just what I want, for no other reason. If you want your side, look no reasons.

Regards,

Oscar.

Citori:

Don't pay any attention to Jeff. He likes those stubby "little" cartridges. My advice... Forget the Lott. Build yourself up a nice .458 Dakota or buy a .458 Rigby from CZ. You've got that big long action. Might as well take advantage of it, right? These two will run circles around the Lott and .458 AR and do it at much lower pressures. Much better cartridges. Rock on!

Just held a .458 Lott Kimber Caprivi at Carters Country today. Do I "need" it? No. Do I want it? Yes. Just wasn't sold on the wood. Not bad, just not great. Need? Is there anythig a .470 double, .416. bolt or .375 bolt couldnt do? Probably Not. Do I "need" another double, a couple of bolt actions, etc.? Definitely. The .458 Lott and a .505 Gibbs; 9.3 x 74, .500 NE, etc... Just explain all this to my wife.

to keep the elephants out of the garden that's what I told the wife when I had my 416 T built.

She said we don't have any elephants in the garden I told her see its working allready and I don't even have it home form the smiths yet. Wink

I well use the same method when Find a lott to buy. But she'll say your other elephant gun is working just fine. I'll say that I hear that the elephants are getting bigger. Besides I picked up a half a dozen 458 fmjs at the shot show. I need something to shot them in. Big Grin
