Question:
Which woodleigh bullet would you prefer for a shot at charging brown bear?
So say you had the urge to try out a ruger no 1 in this calibre.

All are at nominal orginal 577Nitro energy of about 7000ftlbs.

For the 750gn FMJ you can substitute Barnes/ a-square etc.

For the 750gn softpoint the same.

For the 650's there is no others very similar I am aware of, except for the FMJ you could susbtitute the barnes 650 mono.

For those who are not familiar with the 650gn SP, they both have same SD as a 270gn .375 bullet. The nitro version is designed for the nitro express velocities.

And the BP bullet is designed for speeds very similar to a 405gn 45-70 bullet in a lever action.

Karl.

Choices:
750gn softpoint @2050 fps
650gn SP (nitro vel jacket) @2200fps
650gn SP(blackpowder) @ 2200fps
750gn FMJ @2050fps
650 gn FMJ @2200fps

Having actually shot a number of charging Brown Bears I'll go with the 750 grain soft nosed bullet at 2050fps.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Karl, I think you need to build your 577 double with 16" barrels so it'll be handy in the brush. With Tritium front bead and ghost ring rear. Maybe a Black teflon finish to fight off the elements.

I voted for the SP 650 gr having seen what it will do and what it will penetrate I also would like to have a little a more flat shooting round....................+ I can get around 2600 fps in the Nyati with the 650 gr nut

Jeffe,
Blackbear/lion was to be the second poll which would cover our closest equivalent here a monster boar(sort of).
Obviously for a poll on thickskinned african and water buff the 750's will get all the votes.I thought the brown bear might bring the 650 choice into it- to compare with one of our scrub bulls with a 270gn bullet of same SD from a 375.
Then again I haven't seen a brown bear. Big Grin

Rob, 750 X as the barnes SP's as well since they are both 750, admittedly the X is a tougher class of bullet.

Lar, actually I was thinking more along the lines of a 577 alongside a 10 ga shotbarrel . Heavy and canty and like all cape guns niether fish nor foul, but a hell of a talking point.

PC is that the BP or nitro 650 you are using now?

Karl.

Karl,

I still use the BP 650 as I want a little more expansion.

Why the 750 grain? I have both the the 3" and the 2 3/4" and would opt for the 650 as being softer. I don't have your experience but I have found the 750 as too hard for Lion. It doesn't open up as much as the 650 grain, although it is adequate. Wink

Why not just go to the 10 Bore Paradox? A 850 Grain bullet alongside of 10 Bore 4 ought should do some damage. Razzer
