Never mind... Should have checked ballistics before posting. 300 gr bullet is essentially flat to 100.
Regards

I have a folding leaf on my Win 375H&H that I am getting regulated. I envision this only be used when following up DG. What would be a good range for it? 50 yards? 100 yards?

(I have a scope and peep site for normal work)

I am leaning towards 50.

Thanks,

John

the bullet's arc (you probably know, a bullet FALLS the second it leaves the barrel, but the barrel is angled up), with a 100 yard zero, cross line of sight (los) at ~25 yards and then again at 100yards... and the further you set the zero, well, that's the distance it crosses LOS again.. past that point, the bullet is BELOW LOS.

So, a 50yard zero, past 50 yards in a DGR means it will ALWAYS be low at 50+ yards, in a DGR caliber.

it should be~1 to 1.3" high, if zeroed for 100 yards, which is genearlly a good idea.

that being said, a 375HH is a far longer range gun than a classs 4 stopping rifle...

Me? irons at 100, and ignore the flip ups

I know it isn't a classic stopping caliber. But it is much better then a stick in the eye and it is all I got. Smiler

I was originally thinking that as well. But both Rem and Win show the following ballistics with a 300 gr bullet zeroed at 100.

50 100 150
0.0 zero -1.7
0.0 zero -1.6

After my failed experience with Leupold QR mounts I am replacing them with EAW. They make a nice little peep site that snaps in the rear base when the scope isn't in place. So the only time I would use a flip up express in in a bush when a peep/scope wouldn't be a smart choice. That is why the short range question.

Sorry, didn't mean to offer that the rifle isn't a fine thinig.... just was pointing out that normally it's a longer range than, say, a 458 lott Smiler

Or, you could 6 o'clock hold at 50 and hold ON at 100, and should have a slightly high (less than an inch, at 50

A 375H&H scope setting trejectory is as follows:

25 yds, +1/4"

50 yds, +1 1/2"

100 yds, +3"

150 yds, +1 3/4"

200 yds ZERO

250yds, -4 1/2"

300 yds, -12 1/2"

With a 300 gr bullet!

This setting makes you rifle dead on at 25 yds, for close in shooting, and about as close as you can hold off hand to 100 yds, but gives you a rested shot you can make out to 300 yds if needed, with dead on at 200 yds, and point blank range of 250 yds!

With the irons sights set dead on at 100 yds, will make the 25 yds to 150 yds no more than 2" high at mid point.

if you are only going to use the folding leaf for following up dangerous game wouldn't you want it for close quarter work ??
say 25 feet to 25 yards max
and how are you going to see the sight with the scope on ?

otherwise stick with a good low power scope with a wide field of view.

in reality i would think you'd never see the rear sight in close quarter work if the rifle fits you properly. it would point instinctively like a shotgun. and if it doesn't fit properly no amount of sight is going to make up that deficit

Following up DG? Who cares where it is shooting? Smiler

I know there is a mental confidence thing with tiny groups but if sighted-in at 50 yards it is close enough. I sight mine in at 25 yds. and call it good. Even so it will be pretty flat beyond the distance I can see anyway!

Thanks for the advice.

I have EAW quick release mounts being put on the rifle after my Leopold QR's failed.

So it is a simple thing to pull the scope off.

I am thinking 50 yards is going to be good for the leaf.

Regards,
John

Are you sure that you will be able to see the rear site with EAW's?

I have always found them to high and that's why I don't like them.
