Bob,
You say if you have this tenitus to go see a doctor..what can they do? Me ears have been bad since I was a kid from all the shooting. I have never been to see a doc...just figured they would tell me to get used to saying "What"?...Now you got me thinking I am ging to be brain dead in two years! In all sincerity, is there any reason to go in and see somebody?

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! I use two ear protectors all the time we shoot here in our indoor range.

I use one of those you stick into your ears, plus a Peltor over the ear set.

Never use anything while out hunting though.

I follow the exact program used by Saeed. I use the injection molded ear plugs under my noise attenuating (sp?) Peltor ear muffs. Works great to salvage what is left of my hearing.

Actually, I am very surprised that I CAN hear as well as I do.

We used to shoot metalic silhoutte with handguns.

We used several makes of revolvers in both 357 and 44 magnums. Several Contenders and Remington's XP100 handguns.

We used to do this every afternoon, and generally fire several hundred rounds each day!

All without any hearing protection. Confused

ROSCOE...

Nothing can be done to get rid of tinnitus. It is a warning sign, though, that one might have a hearing loss. Another warning sign is the loss of clarity of conversations, missing a word here and there. By the time folks have to repeat our names to get our attention the damage has already progressed to a serious stage.

If you are at all concerned see a specialist; general practitioners are poorly equiped to make evaluations

Bob,
No doubt I have tennitus, but why is it necessary to see a doc? I have a constant ring in my right ear (I shoot LH) and although I can still funcition, I find it difficult to hear a conversation if there is a lot of background noise. I am very careful now when shooting and wear the best hearing protection available. Can a doc do anything for me or just tell me what I already know. BTW I may sound like a smart ass but I really am concerned about my long term outlook. I have yet to hit 40 so god willing I have a lot of hunting left in this life, let alone raising 3 children!

Recently, (this year) I have not been able to wear plugs because of allergy related irritation. So it's just muffs.

What are the brand/model recommendations for the lowest profile, yet highest attenuation (dbA rating) ear muffs?

Borealis Bob,

Thanks for all of you input! It is much appreciated, as this concerns me a lot. Now that you are talking about atrophy of the speech center of the brain, I am even more concerned!

I do have the exact same questions (and nearly the exact circumstances) now as ROSCOE:

I have ringing in both ears, loud enough that I have to crank up the TV a bit to hear over it. I also notice that I miss some words in low volume conversations, and sometimes struggle to keep up to a conversation as a result.

So, is there anything that a doctor can do other than tell me what I know, sympathize with my situation and tell me to be more careful?

Just curious, as I still hear pretty good (above the "line" on hearing tests, but near it on the high tones...approx 20 to 25 on 6, 7 and 8), just not as well as I used to. Surely I wouldn't be a candidate for hearing aids yet????

Thanks again for your help, Bob.

Cheers,
Canuck

I wear Peltor ComTac muffs when shooting at a range, and sometimes when hunting too. My hearing isn't what it used to be, and I try to protect what is left as much as possible.

I am also in the same boat as Canuck.

I get by well, but I do have that cosntant ringing in my ears. I have had this ringing for years.

What are the typical next steps from a treatment standpoint that someone in our position may undertake as options?

Thanks!
CL

BTW, I had also heard (pun intended) of potential concerns over doubling-up on hearing protection. Apparently Bombardier Aerospace conducted a study about this and found that one set of protection was better than two. Something to do with the way the sound waves travel... Unfortunately, I have no proof and I lost contact with the person that told me about this. Could this make any sense?

Very astute observation, I think. I'm sure it contributed to my hearing loss. When I was a member of one of the Bay Area PDs (SF Bay Area), I used to regularly shoot my ancilliary carry gun, a Sten full-auto 9mm, in our concrete basement police range, with no hearing protection whatsoever. My ears would hurt for days afterward, but sound moderators (silencers) were unavailable for all practical purposes. Cotton balls in the ears were all that was commonly known at the time, and they were so uncomfortable as to be used by almost no one.

Had OSHA existed at the time, their staff probably would have all died of apoplexy.

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

ROSCOE..

You can either see an ENT or a hearing aid specialist. Seriously consider treatment.

Canuck..

Good, you've already been tested ! I'm a bit leery of making a assessment without actually doing the test myself, but the info you post would indicate a mild hearing loss. Once one gets much past a 30db loss in the high frequencies one should consider hearing aids. The high frequencies are where the soft-sounding, clicking-type consonant sounds (p, t, s, f, ch, sh, th, etc ) reside. A deficit in this area causes us to miss out on consistently picking up the sounds we need to understand the speech sounds we are hearing.

Check out a couple of hearing aid specialists in your area; get references from senior friends, etc. Doctors accuse hearing aid specialists of being too aggressive in wanting to start treatment early; specialists accuse doctors of waiting until the damage is too far along.
