Hi, anyone shooting a 470 Capstick? The only brass I've seen online is A-Square, Quality or Bell with Bell being by far the cheapest. Any feedback on which brass you use and which to avoid? Also the only dies I've found online are RCBS and are very expensive. Anyone have recommendatons for dies?

Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck

Thanks Jeffeosso.

It's so sad that so many of us have to learn from our own experience lol, myself included in spite of the overwhelming advice to leave my 375 H&H alone. I'm sending my 375 H&H off in two weeks to Clearwater Reboring to get rebored to 470 Capstick a week from Monday (right after elk season). I've already bought a box of ammo from A-Square to send along with it. After much advice from several boards to leave it alone, my youngest son (who will inherit the rifle) said: "Dad if you want it, you won't be happy until you do it, if it's too much recoil you can always sell it." It will weigh 10.5 lbs without scope so it "shouldn't" be too bad recoil wise.

Wisdom from the mouth of my youngest son ...

Chuck

I bought a bunch (300) of bell cases when I got the gun -- it was $19.00 for 20 cases then. I bought the rcbs dies as they have always preformed well for me.

Chuck375:
Why do a re-bore, wouldn't it be better to have a new barrel chambered for 470 Capstick installed?
If later you decided you hated the 470 Capstick you could have the original barrel re-installed.
If the rifle was a valuable collector item like a pre 64 M70 I would think being able to re-install the OME barrel in it original chambering would be a plus to the value of the rifle.

Thanks buckeye for the info on Bell cases and RCBS dies.

greenjoy I decided (finally!) to have it rebored rather than rebarreled for several reasons:

1) My gun is too heavy and in particular too muzzle heavy based on my subjective feel. Reboring should help both of those issues. A rebarrel would make the gun heavier since most barrel makers would recommend at least one contour heavier.

2) because the current gun/barrel is accurate and I've been told by both my gunsmith and Clearwater that it shouldn't degrade any.

3) It's a lot cheaper, $425 versus over $1000 and will be ready much sooner.

Regards and wish me luck,

Chuck

Hornady basic brass!

CH/4D dies only if a 3 die set ... do not accept their 2 die set (shouldnt be making them anymore anyway) as they don't work with the expander plug installed.

Custom ... go Hornady for about US$150 from memory.
Cheers...

Chuck375,

I have Redding dies (not cheap) and try Buffalo arms for the brass.

Thanks borntohunt, I emailed Redding, I like their dies a lot, but 470 Capstick isn't in their current online catalog.

Here's an online source. Don't know if they have it in stock or not.

http://www.huntingtons.com/

I bought about 200 pieces of Bell from them a few years ago, just before Mast stopped making Bell brass. It has been good brass. But I save it just for loading my hunting, final testing and sight in ammo. I use the Hornady Basic for practice and initial load development. I just the Hornady basic brass though my Redding FL sizing die. I comes out just a few thousandths shorter than my normal trim length and the internal volume is almost identical to my new Bell cases.

I had to special order my Redding dies. It took about 4 weeks to get them though Sinclair International.
