I just purchased a A-Square Hannibal in this caliber and was wondering if there was any loading data available?
Rifle has a 2.5x Leupold long eye relief mounted. Should be a good thumper Smiler

Get a copy of "Any Shot You Want". There's a whole chart of reloading data for the 600 grain A-Square Dead Tough bullet along with pressure data measured by Piezo Transducer. Be careful, you can get to high pressures real quick with some of the loadings. The propellets they used were H-4895, IMR-4064, RL-12, IMR-4320 & RL-15. The vel ranged from 2316 to 2503 with the pressures ranging from 42,900 to 61,600.

I have this information to add if you are interested in shooting the 570gr Barnes TSX.

Brass: Norma

Bullet: Barnes 570gr TSX
Powder: IMR4064
COL: 3.73"
Muzzle velocity: 2330 fps (avg)
QuickLoad pressure prediction: 63400 psi

The above is a MAX load.

Many thanks for the replies. I emailed Mr Alphin, and he replied with info that he can provide a full history on my rifle and can supply dies/bullets/brass etc.

ScottS : what kind of accuracy are you getting and is yours a Hannibal?

ScottS does not even have a picture of a 500 ASquare rifle. He is just a troll using that name this post. I think he used to be Judy, then Axel, and I forgot the others. Ask him to post a picture of his 500A2 on todays newspaper so you can see the date and rifle chamber marking.

The load I posted ran about 2" at 100 yards. The rifle prefers IMR3031 at a lower velocity, and will print 1" groups @ 100 yards.

No the rifle isn't a Hannibal.

Heck I'm interested in any true results on the 500A-Sq. I've recently aquired a 416 Rigby CZ that I like so much that I might buy another to build an A-square on. So please provide usefull tips and advice. Also smiths willing and able because I've already had a couple of rifle projects and lots of money thrown away on BS and I'm tired of not getting what I want . R.

IanD,

I recently acquired a 500A2 (the one at the RMH Big Bore Shoot this spring..you may have seen the pics and vids on the CDN forum, which are still stickied to the top of the forum at the moment).

I'd be interested in sharing notes with you. 470 Mbogo previously owned the A2, so I hope to get his reloading data sometime (when I remember to ask). I'd be happy to share whatever I come up with on my own too.

Cheers,
Canuck

Jeffeosso,

As I recall the Quickload velocity was a bit higher than the chronographed velocity for both the IMR3031 and IMR4064 loads. Would have to review the notes, but I am remember a number like 80 to 90 fps higher with Quickload. As I, and other have noted, Quickload seems to be off on straight walled cases, and the 500 A^2 is damned near a straight walled case.

The 3031 load has a muzzle velocity around 2180 fps out of my rifle's 23" barrel.

Hi Canuck,

I seen those videos and photos. That's a great shoot you guys put together.
I sure would like to take part in the next one. I also have a .378 Wby to bring along Wink

Definately keep in touch with the load data and I will do the same. I haven't got the rifle yet, but should be here in a few weeks or so. Can hardly wait!

Here is a pic of the rifle.

IanD,
If A-Square made your Hannibal 500 A-Square rifle, the barrel is a McGowen 10" twist, I'll wager.

Mine are too (McGowen 10" twists). My barrels are 23" and 27" long.

Favorite load in 23" barrel: RL-15 110.0 grains with 570-grainers (GSC or Barnes), 460 Wby brass, Federal GM215M or F-215 primer, 2405 fps, very accurate.

With 640 to 750-grainers (Speer,Barnes, AAA, Hornady, milsurp ball and AP) just start low for gentle kicks: 100-105 grains of H4350 or IMR-4350.

Work up to desired velocity and recoil tolerance. 110 grains of any of the 4350's seems to be my sweet spot with the heavy bullets for velocity around 2150 fps in the 27" barrel with 750-grain Hornady A-Max. This is not a maximum load.

The A-Square manual shows loads for 600-grain softs, in their 10" twist barrel of 26" length, A-Square brass, CCI-250 primer. Max velocity was obtained with H4895:

H4895 106.0 grains >>> 2346 fps >>> 55,300 psi
H4895 117.0 grains >>> 2527 fps >>> 64,000 psi

Max average pressure allowed is 63,860 psi

IanD,
How do you find the forward mounted scope? It's not a scout scope is it..probably a leupold pistol scope?
Looks like a fun rifle..good luck and can't wait to hear how it shoots

Nice looking rifle. I have a 500 a-square Hannibal, 375 H&H Hannibal as well as a 338 Excaliber Hannibal model. They shoot very well if I do my part. Taken two bull elephant, lion, hippo and several cape buffalo with the 500 a-square. Will be going back to Zim in Sept to chase bull elephants again. If I see what I want will try and get another. Can't help you on load data have just used a-square ammunition which has worked well. I am pretty good size guy with good size hands and really like the control of the weapon the stock gives me. Good luck with your Hannibal.
