I've used my Whitworth plinker load for several years, 47 gr 5744 and 220 grain Hornady flat points. It's very accurate, next to no recoil, and great for deer and pigs. Not a long range round, but effective nonetheless. This load stepped up big time earlier this week. A good friend has a property in the Texas Hill County and learned that a group of elk had started moving onto his place recently. This is a part of Texas with loads of exotics, and no idea where they had originally come from. He invited me, and we soon found the pattern a group of 5 cows were using. I also had my 260 grain Accubond loads with me, but was not 100% confident on scope settings, since I'd been using the 220's last. I wanted to drop the elk in its tracks since the property line to a larger ranch was nearly. I decided to be rely on shot placement over horsepower. The elk showed around 4:30 and I targeted the second largest cow. At the shot, she humped up and ran down the hillside. I waited to let her stiffen, as I didn't want to push a wounded animal to potentially jump a fence. After a bit, we followed a short blood trail and found her. Next, the hard work of quartering her and bringing the venison up to the path where a four-wheeler could bring the meat in several trips up to the cabin. The old 375 never lets me down. ![]()

Congrats! I'm convinced that if I weren't such a gun nut, I could get by with nothing more than a .375H&H for any hunt.

Great choice Bob! Did you recover the bullet? How did it hold up? DRSS(We Band of Bubba's Div.) N.R.A (Life) T.S.R.A (Life) D.S.C.

Thanks Lee. Didn't recover bullet. We were working in the dark down a hillside from the nearest path, so we had to take a shortcut and skip digging thru the carcass. I have recovered a 220 from a good sized hog and had a perfect mushroom. I think pushing this bullet to about 2200 to 2300 is just on the sweet spot. Bob

Spent all day saturday cutting and wrapping. We estimated the cow weighed about 600 lbs. The picture doesn't capture just how big the girth was. Had elk steaks last nite, freezer full of roasts and steaks. Need to dig into the recipe books. Being from New Orleans, none of my local recipes seem to call for elk. Bob

![]() ![]() ![]() Forrest, It's a fine Whitworth. I had Tip Burns cut off the magnaport & shorten barrel to 22". Also cut off plastic forend tip and shortened stock to cut out a flaw, replaced tip with ebony. Tip also installed a 2 position safety. It carries well, basically shoots EVERYTHING to same point of aim, and is one of my most accurate rifles. What's not to love.Bob ![]()

Congratulations, nice cow. I agree with the above quote, but might still need a prairie rat rifle. ![]() ![]() velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.
