Hi can anyone recommend a gunsmith for a 375 H&H to 475 Capstick conversion for a CZ 550 Safari Magnum? Also any opinions on Krieger barrels? This would be a next winter project. I'm going to enjoy my 375 H&H elk and bear hunting this year. However, I do plan to go cape buffalo hunting in the next few years. I wouldn't mind a little more gun and the recoil of the 375 H&H was depressingly mild ...

Chuck

Chuck

I really like Krieger barrels. The larger calibers are all cut-rifled, and it is my opinion that you get a better barrel.
A barrel blank can have a small hard or soft spot, and the button will hang up or jump. It's why they air-gauge them. A pressure spike or drop indicates the issue I spoke of. That is why some barrel makers offer a standard grade, a match, and a super match barrel. If it gauges out less than 1% variance it's a Super Match, 3%, Match, and maybe 5% for a hunting barrel.
Years ago a gentleman named Steve Chernicky offered a service that would run a rod with a delrin button thru the barrel and measure the changes in twist. He found factory barrels and custom ones that had up 1" variation in twist at different spots.
They did not shoot very well. With a cut-rifled barrel there is no variance. The other advantage is the ability to spec the land and groove ratio and dimensions and make the internal dimensions exactly what you want.

More information than you probably wanted, but I like back up on claims like this.

Save yourself a TON of issues and either 1: call the custom shop and order you a 470 Capstick, or 2 BUY A LOTT ..

where's why..
375 CZ $850 (after you sell the barrel)
barrel+install $600
sights and install $300
blue $150
stock work (well, this is a wash, so ignore it $200)
dies $150
$2050

Or
$1000, CZ 458 lott + hornady dies

opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club

Hi Jeffoso, I have a beautiful CZ 550 Safari Classic in 375 H&H.

I don't want a Lott, don't know why, just don't want one. The 470 Capstick looks like a nice semi-wildcat, with factory ammo available, and cases that can be fabricated from 416 Rem brass.

By the way, I know a guy who did a CZ550 conversion to 470 capstick and he said it was relatively easy - just a little filing of the rails. And he liked have a 6 shot DGR.

Although I have no experience with the Capstick I would consider one for myself. I should have fired 470CapstickA2's rifle at the shoot to try it out. Also thanks to 470CapstickA2 for the cartridge to my collection. Cannot build one this year due to Montana project, but I'm always looking. Rodney.

I've been in contact with Ed Plummer, I'm going to have him give my CZ Safari Classic his CZ upgrade #1 package this spring (sending it next week), and have him do the 470 Capstick conversion over the winter...
