Question:
I am curious as to if you had your own personal choice of these particular .45-up calibers, which would you choose; for DG hunting, general big bore shooting (playing), collectability, and reloading component availability. bewildered
Consider each caliber loaded to 2500 fps (except for the .585 Nyati, consider that one at 2200fps.)

I already know where Dave Estergaard's vote goes! Feel free to blow you're own horn here Dave!!! rotflmo

Choices:
.450 Rigby
.450 Dakota
.470 MBogo
.505 Gibbs
.585 Nyati (3" version)

if you had asked for the proper things to put in the poll first, you would have gotten an open answer.

550 express, 470 AR...

and of what you have listed, 470 mbogo

If I had the option of including a few more "entries" I would have included the .550 Magnum, since it is an intermediary between the .505 Gibbs and the .585 Nyati. Frowner I could ONLY choose five! CRYBABY

I already have grown accustomed to my TWO .416 Rigbys (I also shoot them PRONE when the occasion warrants Big Grin ) so I am looking at leaping up the power scale. lol

The only thing wrong with this poll is, there was no NONE OF THE ABOVEchoice! If one only shoots bolt rifles, the only one listed that has any nostalgic history id the 505 Gibbs, and the 450 Rigby. The rest are Johny come latelys.

I would have made this a three part poll, with a choice between bolt, and double, and a list in Double rifles, and another for bolt rifles.

I voted for the 505 Gibbs, but was torn between it, and the 450 Rigby. The Rigby would most likely be more versatile than any of the choices! All are uselessly fast, however!

Isn't the .450 Rigby a 1995 creation of the owner of the Rigby brand name? That would make it nostalgic only by association with the Rigby name. It is a blown out Rigby case with less body taper, very similar to the older and more nostalgic .450 Dakota. Smiler

The .505 Gibbs is the biggest case head that should be put in a sporting rifle, and that borders on silly chest thumping.

To rank my preferences of those shown, and I do own one of each:
1) .470 Mbogo
2) .450 Dakota
and
3) .505 Gibbs, for nostalgia sake

What is the difference between the 505 Gibbs and the 500 Jeffrey? Is one superior to the other?

Compare the first TWO in this pic. thumb You can see the difference in the pics.

You also need to know, and someone feel free to correct me if I am misinformed, that the 500 Jeffery uses bullets with a diameter of .509" and weigh 570 gr., while the .505 Gibbs uses .505" bullets that weight 525 gr. In either case, you can push the .505 Gibbs faster, with a much lower pressure. Cool

.500 Jeffery has a .510" groove diameter, so true caliber is .510, though many bullets are indeed .509 caliber (like the Barnes XLC and TSX), and the common loadings for the .500 Jeffery were 535 grainers and 570 grainers.

.505 Gibbs is low pressure loaded with 525 grain bullets of .505 caliber, and barrel groove diameter same .505".

The pressures of the .505 Gibbs are kept low due to bolt thrust issues with the huge casehead of 0.640" diameter, case length of 3.150": .505/525gr@2300fps

The .500 Jeffery is almost as bad, but can be loaded to slightly higher pressures, with the casehead diameter of 0.619", rim diameter of 0.575", and case length of 2.756". However the traditional .500 Jeffery load is "insignificantly better" (and higher pressured) than the .505. The traditional .500 Jeffery load: .510/535gr@2300fps

Best of all would be the proposed ".500 Mbogo 3 Inch Express" with case length 3.040" max and casehead diameter of 0.589" and 0.590" rim (0.585" real world head and rim):

.500M3IE!

That should deliver 570 grainers at 2500 fps with pressures in the 50KPSI range, with Varget Extreme or RL-15 and no fillers needed. Aiee! thumb
