Since my 458 Lott Brno 602 has been stolen ,I,m after a new custom gun now. I have the barrel blank and wood ,but since the donor action is stolen ,I will be after a replacement action. What actions would you recommend with the following points, decent magazine capacity of 5-6 rounds, control round feed, enough length for loaded 458 Lott, maybe a pop up peep site, detachable magazine option and integral dovetails. Should I go for something like a Dakota action or stick with a Brno/CZ? What other custom actions out there would be suitable for a high end custom gun?

Sympathy please ,I have champagne tastes and beer budget

I think the cz 550 with new bolt handle welded on, 3-pos saftey and plenty of polishing and getting risd of the advert on the side will come up lovely. My cz 550 lott atkes 6 rounds in the mag !! now thats firepower !!

cr500, sorry to hear about the theft of your action. Who the hell would steal an action? What's the world coming to?

I'm with PC on the "best" replacement, assuming that, as with most people, money is a factor for you. It's very cost effective to use the CZ and it will buff up nicely. I have one put together by AHR.

PC, mine only holds five down. Well, it holds six, but it's very tight and won't feed with six down.

Did you use an aftermarket floor plate to get the sixth one to fit and feed?

I reckon the finest are the most expensive (GM, Pechtl, Hein, Brevex, etc) but there's nothing wrong with a properly set up CZ550, ZKK602, Olympic Arms Ultramag, 1917 Enfield, M70.

I have heard that the Hartmann & Weiss were about the best out there right now. somebody on the board was having a 505 gibbs built on one.

The Hartmann & Weiss action is a very fine action. It will make a nice 505 Gibbs. I can't wait to ring the gun out, but not in the near future.

The action for the 458 Lott depends on how much you are prepared to spend and how much work you intend to do on the action. All actions listed above can will work just fine.

jeffe,

Does the Wisner floorplate allow for six down?

Jeffeoso I have just come back from the gunmakers shop and have been talking to him about options. I am kind of leaning towards a ZKK602 or a CZ550 as they will be getting the full treatment anyway. I was wondering though if you know if the ZKK602 bolts are the same as the CZ550s? The only part I have left of my 602 is the near new bolt with Wisner 3 pos safety. Will this fit a CZ550?

The Olympic Arms Ultra Mag was mentioned as an action.

John Ricks built me a rifle on one and it was a total diaster. It was extremely rough, and the bolt mechanism is totally flawed in design.

The twist lock-in retaining lug on the bolt sleeve is so small, for the amount of force exerted on it by the firing pin spring, and wears off rapidly, causeing the rifle to misfire.

I don't know how many hours I put in to grinding, sanding and filing to make it look like anything other than a piece of slag, A couple hundred bucks worth of parts, shipping back and forth to the factory, three trips to the factory with it personally, the last time a whole new bolt, and the last trip to the range, it strarted to misfire again after working the bolt a dozen time or so.

I started asking gunmakers and the answer I got was universal. No one had ever been able to make them work reliable, so the barrel came off and the Ultra-Mag action sets in the scrap bin with a bunch of other trophies. Too ugly for a paper weight.

Had they used a screw-in Mauser type bolt sleeve and slicked it up a little it would have been a real good action.

Walex. What you said of the custom action needing a lot of work is what the gunmaker who will build the gun said about some of the other custom actions he has in at the moment. They all need a lot of work. Maybe the Brno/CZ action is not such a bad idea after all.
Does anyone have any links to Hartmann & Weiss or Vektor Magnum Mauser? I wouldnt mind having a look all the same.

mrlexma,

I have exagerrated the mag holds six and feeds the sixth off so really it's five in the mag and one in the chamber I should have clarified that sorry..............but I can load six and it will feed it.

cr500 You didn't read the entire post. the biggest problem was that it couldn't be made to fire very often and the part wore out completely when the bolt was cycled 20 to 30 times.

New pearts, new bolt and new parts, nothing made any difference.

Look we're talking DGR here, it's got to function, period.

Grinding off the clinkers was not the fatal flaw. Thanks Wayne

If you're on a budget the Montana Rifle Company M1999 (a M98 derivitive) is the appropriate size for the Lott and makes up into a nice custom rifle. Barrelled actions are also available in that chambering and their barrels are gaining a great reputation for quality:

Looks like they can do a complete barrelled action ready to stock either blued or in stainless for around $900 US. The company can also export actions to Oz.

And they are pretty much the only game around offering SS long actions, left handed, barreled actions for a price that will not break the bank. And they offer just about every factory caliber there is plus some wildcats. I have a SS leftie 416 Rem Mag on order as we speak.

cr500,

Golmatic or Gottfried PRECHTL are the same, the make the actions for Hartmann & Weiss - Dumoulin makes them inhouse and the are as good as PRECHTL or better.

Hope this helps,
Roland
