Did anyone see Boddington last night on Guns & Ammo television discussing the pros & cons of various big bore cartridges? He also talked about the pros & cons of the double vs the bolt gun for DG. Pretty good show actually. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

It was a pretty decent show. Only two things bothered me. One was that I cringed everytime I saw their set with an open rack with over half a dozen expensive wood stocked rifles sitting within two feet of a blazing fireplace. Also, in the blurb on single shots for DG, he mentioned that the Ruger was available in several suitable calibers and then panned to one with a box of .405's. He then said his daughter, I believe, used one for buffalo. I have to suspect she popped a buff with a .405. The PH quickly followed up with two more. I thought it interesting that the PH had a pretty strong opinion in the bolt/double debate. He thought that bolts were better for buff, with doubles the ticket for everything else. Not sure I don't agree except for a buff coming at close quarters.

You are right Art. Boddington said the deal was that If the buf didn't go down at her 1st shot the PH would dump 2 rounds from his double into it & he did in the video. The fire behind those nice rifles concerned me too so I focused on the fire. The flame pattern kept repeating itself. Fake fire! Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. I believe that Boddington's daughter dropped a big water buffalo with one shot out of her 405/No1.

Stunt double to fire the rifle...? I remember getting the Weatherby catalog every fall for Christmas as a kid. In 1957 (?) Roy introduced his 257Wby by shooting several Cape Buffalo with one. Didn't actually claim he killed them with one shpt per, but implied it. Over the years on our farm growing up my dad probably killed over 100 head each steers and hogs with a Colt Woodsman...from 4-6 feet away staring at him thru the corral bars. The steers were over 1600lbs, probably like a 2-3 year old Cape...am I taking that Woodsman to AFrice with me next spring for back up? Not bloody likely! regards, Rich there is a world of difference between killing and stopping power.

I personally have no problem with the .405 in the scenario described in the piece. The hunter was confident on making a killing shot with the .405 and the PH was given instructions to back up her shot if he thought a backup was required. Given whom her father is and the probable access to big bore guns available to her, I give her great credit for accepting her limitations regarding recoil and making an informed choice regarding her choice of gun/cartridge.

PH shot too quick IMO. But what do I know - I don't even have my own TV show.

Boddingtons daughter fired. The buf turn & ran to her left. The PH dumped two rounds into it. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I haven`t seen the program ofcourse, but isn´t normal to let the client track down his game.. unless the PH can truly see the the first bullet was malplaced??. I would hate to have anybody shoot my game IF the bullet had strucked well, for the BUFF only to run 50 yards or so!! How many statistically, actually shoot BUFFS that drops dead instantly in their tracks? DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. Chapters in Sweden & Norway

TOTALLY OFF SUBJECT: 500 Grains, may I ask where, in Utah I assume, that killer bowl is, is there enough snow left in it to ski now, and which set of tracks is yours? I've looked at that photo all I can stand without asking.

The article is here: Bully For The .405 Roosevelt's "big medicine" enjoys a revival. By Craig Boddington http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ammunition/bully_041805/ "Brittany Boddington shot an exceptional Australian wild boar with her father's .405 Winchester Ruger No. 1. Performance on big hogs was so outstanding, the Boddingtons had no qualms about using the rifle on buffalo." "Brittany Boddington's water buffalo had very good horns and weighed close to 2,500 pounds. A single 300-grain Hornady bullet at very close range did the job nicely, making her professional hunter, Peter Harding, very happy." "I like the .405 fine just the way it is, and my daughter loves it. But let's keep this in perspective. Killing a very large animal is one thing. Stopping him is another. On wild boars and lions and tigers and bears, the .405 is definitely a stopper. It's not a stopping rifle on thick-skinned dangerous game, certainly not as currently loaded. As Brittany and I certainly learned -- and as Teddy Roosevelt learned 95 years ago -- it can be used to hunt very large game. But in that role, use it with great care." ------
