Following on from boha's "Standard mauser .500 Jeffery" post, I took a look at the http://www.waffen-schweigert.de web site. There are a number of rifles with a "German" cheek piece shown on the site, including

Is this cheek piece any better or worse that a traditional English style? I quite like the look, but looks become less of an issue when shooting the heavier recoilers.

Thanks

The cheekpiece is the least of your worries, get rid of that terrible drop at the heel first.

Every shot will try to glance off your shoulder, driving the stock into your face and pounding your arm.

Not comfortable at all, to say the least.

A minor disagreement with the above; if the comb is too high you have trouble getting down to the sights in a hurry. Not good on a pure DGR which this appears to be. Form follows function and DGR are very specialized in function.

Much better to mount quickly and on the sights than twiddle with the last bit of recoil reduction. Especially when the gun is designed to shoot standing up for the most part.

Modern pads will make up for a lot of recoil compared to the minor increase from older style stocks.

as harry said... a good pad...

and if the butt is more to 90deg from the BORE the felt recoil becomes far less, a shortcoming of most traditional stocks

I like all those stocks. thumb

Aye, use the drop, pitch, LOP and castoff that makes it fit you so that trigger and sights line up automatically when shouldered, without a hitch. thumb

Cheekpieces are mostly adornment.
A good recoil pad is very important.

I like a little drop at the heel on even the worst kickers and do not understand all the cry babies who can't take a little kick and roll with the punch.

Recoil management is mostly mental. thumb

The pics are exactly the type stock I like. I like some drop at the heel on a big boomer.

The guys that built express rifles many yrs ago new what they were doing with the drop and cast in the stocks. You get it right and it really helps manage recoil.........and I would have to say the Rigbys and H&H etc knew what they were doing........cause we are still copying it today.

Ditto RIP about pitch. If you don't adjust it for drop at the heel and your shooting stance (lean into, straight up or lean back) you don't get a full footprint of the butt in the cup of your shoulder. Don't matter much on a padded 30-06 but it means a lot when the recoil gets up there. I'm no pro but I've managed to prove this to myself thru trial and error on my own guns.

ditto tiggertate who is dittoing my implied ditto of his comments. thumb

It just won't hang comfortably on your shoulder unless the pitch and drop are right.
