Does anyone have any experience with the above caliber? I believe it is a 416 necked up to 458, pushes a 500g bullet 2300fps+? What is the difference in performance over a 458 Lott?
Thanks

It is a .404 Jeffery case, necked-up to .458" and fire-formed.

Velocity is about the same as .458 Lott, 500gr. @ 2400fps.

this is a full length round-- they made a short.. base on 404 specifically.

the 458 AccRel is, well, easier to build and load for.. and has ALOT more load data.

John Bieber has one that was made by Rifles Inc. In fact, it is for sale on Guns International.

Yes, I have one that Lex Webernick (Rifles Inc) made on a pre-64 Model 70 action (1952 if I remember). It is a Buffalo hammer...500gr Trophy Bonded Softs and solids at about 2,400...between a 458 lott and a 460 Wby. I also have 100+ rounds loaded by Superior in properly-headstamped brass, and a new RCBS die set I got from Huntington's. I recently dropped it $400, but could do better for AR folks. It is item 100097688 on Guns International. Nice, easy-to-load caliber with enough power for anything.

Thanks for all of the info guys, sounds like an interesting round. Can you think of any reason to use this over a 458 Lott, as the Lott ammo has become readily available?

A bit more oomph than a Lott, and probably a better candidate to handle the 600gr 458 bullets available now.

I shot one for several years before rechambering to 450 Dakota. CZ550 action. I would be amazed if a Lott could equal velocity of the 404 case. If nothing else you can seat the bullet to 3.75 inches. Best thing about the 458 over a Lott is no belt, and a straight neck to set bullet into rsther than tspered cse of 458 Winchester and Lott. My version had a 25 degree shoulder (innovation of Bill Steigers of Bitterroot bullets). Good brass available from HDS. Easy ctg to reload for.

Von Gruff, great article...thanks! I have a few on the 460 G&A, but not that one. Apparently Elmer Keith was a big fan of the round, or had a part in it's making.

Blame Jeff Cooper and Tom Siatos for this one. Cooper actually named his 460 G&A rifle "Baby." Had one in the chamber and 5 down in the magazine, IIRC. On one occasion, he wrote of killing two buffalo with one shot.

Good hunting.

I have one built on a Brno 602(originally a 458).
Makes 2370 fps with the Hornady 500 RN in front of 95 grs of N150.

My training load is the remington 45/70 405 grs bullet, driven by 75 grs of N130 with dacron on top. Makes 2200 fps with good accuracy.

The 500 grs at 2350-2400 fps kicks a bit, and the biggest thing taken is a norwegian moose at about 800 pounds..

I will rebuild the rifle this winter making it a 404. A bit more classy and original cartridge with lesser recoil. A 400grs .423 bullet will still be adequate for my buffalo or elephant... Smiler

I have a pic of Cooper's 460 G&A "Baby" somewhere, maybe an old G&A and IIRC it has a carbine length barrel.
